Learning at KAS

We are delighted to introduce you to our vibrant PK-12 international community, where we’re committed to developing balanced, independent, and globally-minded students, well-prepared for an interconnected world.

At KAS, we blend the content of U.S. curriculum standards with the inquiry-driven approach of the International Baccalaureate. This unique combination enables us to provide a high-quality education focused on interdisciplinary learning, fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity.

As an international school, we wholeheartedly embrace the IB Mission Statement, aspiring to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who contribute to a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. By integrating the IB framework with U.S. standards, we ensure our students master essential academic skills while embodying traits from the IB Learner Profile. Our dedicated and diverse teachers foster a dynamic environment where students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, ask thoughtful questions, and make meaningful connections across subjects. We’re proud to nurture a community of learners ready to make a positive impact locally and globally.

Our curriculum is purposefully designed to offer developmentally appropriate learning experiences across all grades, from our youngest Pre-K dragons to those embarking on new paths after high school. Students explore complex, real-world issues through meaningful projects across disciplines: third graders craft realistic fiction stories, first graders code with Dash robots in the Makerspace, and sixth graders begin their journey with the cello and violin. MYP students create multilingual vlogs promoting local tourism and sustainability, while DP Math students apply statistical models to predict population growth. High school students might travel to The Hague to participate in the International MUN Conference or to Japan to compete in a regional volleyball tournament, connecting with peers around the globe.

Thank you for visiting our website. We invite you to explore our programs, meet our exceptional faculty, and experience firsthand the vibrant learning environment that makes Kaohsiung American School such a special place.

Warm regards,

Jenny Mitchell
Director for Teaching and Learning

Schoolwide Learner Outcomes

The KAS Learner Profile, adopted from the International Baccalaureate (IB) represents our schoolwide learner outcomes, guiding every aspect of our community and curriculum. These attributes define the skills, attitudes, and values we strive to nurture in all students, ensuring they grow into compassionate, lifelong learners who contribute positively to their communities and the world.

What does “Curriculum” mean at KAS?

Our curriculum is the plan that guides what and how your child learns. It’s different from the traditional approach that focuses mainly on textbooks. At KAS, we take a broader and more hands-on approach to make learning exciting and meaningful.

What Should My Child Learn? (Standards)
We use internationally recognized goals to decide what your child should know and be able to do at each grade level. These goals, called “standards,” are like a roadmap to prepare your child for success in school, university, and beyond.

How Will My Child Learn? (Instruction)
Our teachers don’t just teach from textbooks. They design lessons and activities to help students think, solve problems, and explore new ideas. This way, your child learns by doing, asking questions, and discovering answers—not just memorizing.

What Tools Do You Use? (Resources)
We use a mix of textbooks, projects, technology, and real-world activities to make learning interesting and fun. For example, students might work on group projects, do experiments, or use digital tools to create and share their work.

How Do I Know My Child is Learning? (Assessments)
We use a wide variety of assessments to measure student learning. These include a mix of formative assessments, such as observations and discussions, and summative assessments like projects and presentations.  In addition we use MAP and CAT4 to measure schoolwide progress.

This combination helps every student grow, feel supported, and stay challenged—whether they’re learning English, solving math problems, or exploring science.

Standards

US-based standards are the foundation of the teaching and learning here at KAS. In elementary, we believe in integrating these standards within an inquiry-based framework. The MYP and DP serve as the framework for middle and high school students. All of our graduates receive an accredited American high school diploma and IB DP students may also earn the internationally recognized IB Diploma, IB Bilingual Diploma, or subject specific certificates.

The standards we use at KAS are:

English Language Arts: Common Core Standards
Mathematics: Common Core Standards
Social Studies: American Education Reaches Out (AERO)
Science: Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
Counseling: International School Counselor Association (ISCA)
Physical Health Education: Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE)
Arts: National Core Arts Standards (NCAS)
Languages: American Education Reaches Out (AERO) and the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
