The 8th-grade Chinese program is focusing on a deeper understanding of the Chinese language, its usage in different contexts and platforms. So, it involves not just reading classical authors’ works, but also using various non-literary materials to convey the beauty and complexity of the Chinese language. Throughout this course, 8th-grade learners will engage in a variety of activities and exercises to enhance their linguistic skills, cultural appreciation, and communication abilities.

Chinese 9 High School

Grade: 9
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Chinese 8 in Middle School

This year-long course involves extensive reading of primary texts of modern Chinese fiction, scholarly articles, and books in Chinese. This course also focuses on modern Chinese poetry and prose. Reading and writing are routine tasks; oral discussion and debate are important components of the course.

Chinese 10 High School

Grade: 10
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Chinese 9

Chinese 10 class is a full year course designed to consolidate the students’ ability in high level Chinese. It will help students to be successful and effective language learners competent in the four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. In order for students to go to IB Chinese class well prepared, the Chinese A 10 class will also cover culture, literature and history from ancient China through contemporary China as a supplement. We will focus on textual analysis from reading large classic Chinese literature. Our goal is that Chinese language can be used proficiently and appropriately. We will explore all the styles and assessment methods and formats of the future IB Chinese class such as letters, compositions, literary analysis, journal research, essays of extensive thinking, etc.

Chinese Language Acquisition HS 1 High School

Grade: 9-10
Prerequisite: Very limited to no prior exposure to the Chinese language

The Chinese Language Acquisition HS 1 course prepares students for the DP Language B/Ab initio program by developing essential language skills and cultural knowledge, ensuring a smooth transition to higher-level language learning. It aims to build fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will learn to understand and use common expressions and everyday phrases. The course will cover essential vocabulary and grammar structures, enabling students to engage in simple conversations and comprehend basic written texts.

Throughout the course, students will explore various aspects of Chinese culture, traditions, and social norms, fostering an appreciation for the diversity of the Chinese-speaking world. Activities and assignments will include interactive exercises, multimedia resources, and cultural projects to enhance language acquisition and cultural understanding.

Chinese Ab Initio SL

Grades: 11 and 12 (this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite: Very limited to no prior exposure to the Chinese language

Offered at SL only, this course is designed for students with no previous experience in — or very little exposure to — Chinese. Language ab initio students develop their receptive, productive and interactive skills while learning to communicate in the target language in familiar and unfamiliar contexts. Students develop the ability to communicate through the study of language, themes and texts. There are five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization and sharing the planet. While the themes are common to both language ab initio and language B, the language ab initio syllabus additionally prescribes four topics for each of the five themes, for a total of 20 topics that must be addressed over the two years of the course.

IB Chinese A: Language and Literature SL /HL High School

Grades: 11 and 12 (this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Chinese 10

This course is a study of literature and non-fiction. It provides extensive practice in the close reading and critical analysis needed for IB assignments and examinations. Students are expected to explore ideas through writing and discussion. This course will also focus on non-literature materials such as news, advertisements, articles, and comics to analyze persuasive language skills. Theory of Knowledge curriculum links will also be addressed.
