Math 6

Grade: 6

MYP Math 6 is designed with problem centered units that develop a big idea that is an important cluster of related concepts, skills, procedures, and ways of thinking. As a result, the student will be able to communicate mathematically, and make connections between mathematics and other disciplines. To address MYP standards, this course interweaves mathematical topics of algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, number systems, and measurement. Math 6 continues to explore factors of numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, polygons and angles, perimeter and area, variables and patterns, data analysis, and probability while adding a significant degree of difficulty and interdisciplinary connections to them.

Math 7

Grade: 7

The purpose of this course is to deepen understanding and curiosity of math. The course will cover rational number operations, ratio and proportional reasoning, statistics, probability, and geometric principles. Students are expected to use logic and reasoning when applying mathematical strategies combined with correct usage of mathematical language when explaining their reasoning.

Math 8

Grade: 8

In this course, students will begin to explore the real number system and linear functions. They will then explore Geometry topics such as congruence and similarity, the Pythagorean Theorem, and three-dimensional shapes.

Algebra I

Grade: 9
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Pre-Algebra

Students explore the language of algebra in verbal, symbolic, tabular, and graphical forms.  This course is the basis for all future mathematics courses taken at the high school level.  Students study rational numbers, linear equations and functions, inequalities, polynomials, and quadratics.  The use of the graphing calculator is incorporated.

Geometry

Grades: 9 or 10
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra I
Required: Scientific or TI-84 calculator

This course covers concepts and mathematics that integrate algebra topics, build problem solving skills, and explore real world geometric applications. Students study lines, angles, circles, triangles, surface area, volume, similarity, congruency, and mathematical proofs.

Algebra II

Grades: 9 or 10
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Geometry, or may be taken concurrently with Geometry
Required: TI-84 calculator

This course provides students a curriculum designed to incorporate technology, hands-on activities, and computational mathematics. The course begins with a review of linear functions then moves to study further functions more in depth including quadratic, polynomial, radical, rational, exponential, and logarithmic. Students will also have a brief introduction to trigonometry.

Pre-Calculus

Grade: 10
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra II
Required: TI-84 calculator

Pre-calculus completes the study of the elementary functions begun in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. Students will study polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Other topics include vectors, matrices, polar coordinates and sequences and series. Both algebraic and graphical techniques will be used with a focus on the use of technology, modeling and problem solving.

IB Math Applications & Interpretations SL/HL

Grades: 11 and 12 (this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite for SL: Successful completion of  Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II
Prerequisite for HL: Successful completion of Pre-calculus is strongly suggested 

This course recognizes the increasing role that mathematics and technology play in a diverse range of fields in a data-rich world. As such, it emphasizes the meaning of mathematics in context by focusing on topics that are often used as applications or in mathematical modeling. To give this understanding a firm base, this course includes topics that are traditionally part of a pre-university mathematics course such as calculus and statistics. Students are encouraged to solve real-world problems, construct and communicate this mathematically and interpret the conclusions or generalizations. Students should expect to develop strong technology skills, and will be intellectually equipped to appreciate the links between the theoretical and the practical concepts in mathematics. All external assessments involve the use of technology. Students are also encouraged to develop the skills needed to continue their mathematical growth in other learning environments.

IB Math Analysis & Approaches HL

Grades: 11 and 12 (this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Pre-Calculus

This course recognizes the need for analytical expertise in a world where innovation is increasingly dependent on a deep understanding of mathematics. The focus is on developing important mathematical concepts in a comprehensible, coherent and rigorous way, achieved by a carefully balanced approach. Students are encouraged to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve abstract problems as well as those set in a variety of meaningful contexts. Mathematics: analysis and approaches has a strong emphasis on the ability to construct, communicate and justify correct mathematical arguments. Students should expect to develop insight into mathematical form and structure, and should be intellectually equipped to appreciate the links between concepts in different topic areas. Students are also encouraged to develop the skills needed to continue their mathematical growth in other learning environments. The internally assessed exploration allows students to develop independence in mathematical learning. Throughout the course students are encouraged to take a considered approach to various mathematical activities and to explore different mathematical ideas.
