Welcome to Kaohsiung American School

Founded in 1989, KAS is a fully accredited PreK–12 international school. We believe that a rich, holistic, and international education prepares students for an increasingly complex, multicultural, and rapidly changing world. Our highly qualified and diverse faculty, coupled with American standards-based curricula, the IB Middle Years Programme, and the IB Diploma Programme, inspire our students to discover what drives them, to challenge themselves, and to invest in their passions.

Meet Our New School Leaders! 🐉 Please join us in welcoming our new school leaders to the KAS Dragon Family! Dr. Paul Ducharme — Head of School Originally from Vermont, Dr. Ducharme has spent nearly 30 years working in international education across seven countries and four continents. His journey has taken him from teaching in Lebanon and El Salvador to school leadership in Hungary, Peru, China, and most recently Mumbai, India, where he served as Head of School. He is excited to bring his global experience and commitment to student well-being to KAS. Fun fact: “I’ve had a live anaconda draped across my shoulders—and it was extremely heavy!” Dr. David Butler — High School Principal Originally from Toronto, Canada, Dr. Butler began his teaching career in Canada before moving into international education. He and his wife have since lived and worked in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and now Taiwan. Fun fact: “I’m a big supporter of school theatre and occasionally make cameo appearances in school plays!” Patrick Severijns — Middle School Principal Originally from the Netherlands, Patrick’s journey in international education has taken him from the Netherlands to Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and now to Taiwan. He’s excited to make KAS the next chapter of his journey. Fun fact: “I’ll try almost any new sport at least once—although my enthusiasm sometimes exceeds my ability to stay injury-free!” Sandra Lopez — Elementary School Principal Born and raised in New York City, Sandra has spent 26 years working in education across the United States, Colombia, China, and now Taiwan. With more than 14 years in leadership, she brings experience in international, bilingual, and IB education to KAS. Fun fact: “I love salsa dancing! Put on the right music, and there’s a good chance I’ll be dancing.” We’re excited to have them join our community. If you see them around campus, go say hello, introduce yourself, and start a conversation!

Houston. Australia. Two major international competitions. One incredible robotics journey. 🤖🌍 In April, KAS students Andre (G11) and Hong (G11) headed to Houston, where they temporarily joined a team from Miaoli to compete at the FIRST Championship. Competing in the Goodall Division, the team finished 22nd and earned 2nd Place in the Control Award. Then, it was time to take on Australia. After returning from Houston, Andre and Hong reunited with their own robotics team, made up mostly of KAS Grade 11 students, along with several Grade 10 students and one graduate. The team traveled to Australia for the Asia Pacific Open Championship (APOC), finishing 3rd overall and earning 3rd Place in the Inspire Award. Up against a strong international field, the team delivered an impressive performance. Their results at both competitions highlight the teamwork, creativity, and technical skills they brought to the international stage. A season to remember. Congratulations to Andre, Hong, Nathan, Zachary, Zion, Marvin, Josh, Ian, Dominic, Ryan, Ben, Ethan, and Nison on an incredible season of building, competing, and representing KAS internationally. Curious to learn more about FTC and their experience competing internationally? Please reach out to Andre (G11), Hong(G11) , or any of the team members to hear more! #KAS #KaohsiungAmericanSchool #Robotics
