Dr. Paul Ducharme Head of School

Dr. Paul Ducharme will join KAS as the new Head of School. Originally from a family of educators, Paul developed a deep appreciation for teaching and learning early in life. He brings over twenty years of experience in international education, having served in IB World Schools as a teacher, Principal, Deputy Head, and Head of School.

Paul is deeply committed to holistic education, aligning closely with KAS’s values of excellence, belonging, and well-being. He believes in fostering strong faculty, robust academic programs, and meaningful extracurricular opportunities to support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. His professional interests include strengthening collaboration through Adaptive Schools practices, enhancing IB program alignment, and promoting student-centered learning environments where all students feel known, valued, and supported.

Joining the KAS community with Paul is his wife, Sarah. Together, they have lived and worked internationally while raising their two daughters, Grace and Eva, who are now pursuing their own careers in the United States. In his personal time, Paul enjoys connecting with students and educators, visiting classrooms, and continuing his journey as a lifelong learner. He looks forward to becoming part of the KAS community and exploring all that Kaohsiung & Taiwan have to offer.

Dr. David Butler High School Principal

David Butler will join KAS this year as the new High School Principal for the 2026-27 school year. Originally from Canada, David received both his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Education degrees from Queen's University and graduated with a Master of Philosophy degree in European History from the University of Cambridge in the UK. He earned a second master's degree and his EdD, both in Educational Leadership, from Western University

David began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Canada before spending thirteen years as a teacher, department head, and Assistant Principal at American School of Dhahran in Saudi Arabia and over ten years as Vice Principal and Principal at Canadian International School of Hong Kong. David’s professional interests include authentic methods of assessing student learning, promoting student agency, and developing leadership amongst the teaching faculty. He is drawn to KAS by the school’s belief in a holistic education that emphasizes academic achievement, personal growth and character and is excited to support its strong IB programs.

Also joining as KAS Dragons will be David’s wife, Kimberly, who will teach in the Middle School, as well as their youngest two children and two housecats. David’s hobbies include cooking (and dining), playing Dungeons and Dragons, and reading history and fiction. He can’t wait to discover all that Kaohsiung and Taiwan have to offer!

Patrick Severijns Middle School Principal

Patrick Severijns will join the KAS Dragons as the new Middle School Principal for the 2026–27 school year. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Patrick has dedicated his career to working in international middle schools across the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. He earned a Bachelor of Education in K–12 Physical Education and later completed a Master of Education in Advanced Studies and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Management. Throughout his journey, he has worked at institutions such as United World College Maastricht, Zurich International School, and the American School in London. Most recently, he served as Head of the Middle Years Programme and Deputy Head of School at the International School Groningen.

After years of leading and learning together alongside diverse international school communities, Patrick is excited to begin his next chapter in Kaohsiung. As the incoming Middle School Principal, he sees the middle school years as a unique and energising bridge, where the curiosity and unbridled enthusiasm of the lower school meet the growing thirst for knowledge of high school. He looks forward to working closely with students, families, faculty and staff to build a warm, inclusive culture where everyone feels supported and challenged to thrive.

In his free time, Patrick enjoys various sports (CrossFit, snowboarding, squash, and more), taking long walks with his dog, Floki, sampling local cuisine, and exploring different countries and cultures with his wife, Janne. He eagerly anticipates learning what it means to be a Dragon and to explore the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan and the region to its fullest.

Sandra Lopez Elementary School Principal

Sandra Lopez will join KAS with over 25 years of experience in international and bilingual education. She is currently the Primary Principal and PYP Coordinator at Springboard International Bilingual School in Beijing, where she oversees learning for more than 300 students from Early Childhood through Grade 5. Sandra has also served as a Curriculum and Academic Programs Coordinator, a Special Needs, EAL, and Early Literacy teacher, an Adjunct Professor, and an elementary classroom teacher. She has worked in the United States and Colombia, and has been based in China since 2019.

She holds a BA in Educational Psychology from Hunter College in New York City, a postgraduate diploma in Mental Health, Children and Adolescents from Universidad CES in Medellín, Colombia, and is currently completing her Master’s in Educational Leadership.

Joining Sandra in Kaohsiung will be her husband, Gustavo, who works as an Art Tech supporting makerspace and creative arts programs. They have three older children living in Florida. She is excited to join the KAS community and support the continued growth of the elementary school.

Dr. Jenny Mitchell Director for Teaching & Learning

Jennifer is originally from Wisconsin but has spent most of her career overseas. She has taught in Colombia, Morocco, Singapore, Germany, Sudan, and Croatia. Her teaching experience has been in both American and IB schools, teaching elementary homeroom and PYP and MYP Visual Arts. She has also been a team lead and PYP Coordinator.
Jennifer truly enjoys working with future and current teachers and has taught for Moreland University and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She has a Master’s in Education from Aurora University and is finishing her doctorate in Educational Sustainability through the University of Wisconsin. Jennifer is passionate about education and the power it has to create a more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful world.
When she is not teaching, Jennifer enjoys scuba diving, gardening, reading, exploring, and being outdoors. She lives in Taiwan with her husband, Colin, and two young children, Adelina and Kristof.

Hannah McIntosh Director of Student Support Services

Originally from the southern United States, Hannah completed her BS in Psychology and MA in Counseling before moving to Taiwan.

In her previous role as School Counselor in Taipei, she implemented and coordinated the Learning Support program for exceptional students. She has many years experience working with children, including former positions as Refugee Program Specialist and Tutor for students with intensive academic, social/emotional, and language needs. Throughout her career, she has worked with students with the most intensive behavioral and academic challenges. She is licensed as an Associate Professional Counselor, School Counselor, and Special Education teacher, all in the United States. Her classroom teaching experience includes AP Psychology, Introductory Psychology, and Life Skills. She is passionate about advocacy, inclusivity, and creating spaces that support all students in accessible education.

A fitness enthusiast, she spends her free time doing CrossFit with her Taiwanese husband. Additionally, she enjoys cooking, traveling, cultural experiences, as well as professional and academic pursuits.

Lisa Fang Director of Admissions

Lisa Fang joined KAS as an admissions officer and later became the Director of Admissions. She graduated from Wenzao Ursuline College with a degree in German and an English emphasis. Before joining KAS, Lisa worked in management at BMW. She is married and has one son.

Brian Meehan Director Of Learning Technology

Brian is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Applied Networking, Security, & Systems Administration. Prior to working in education, Brian was an engineer with Eastman Kodak Company, where he worked in the technology aspects of print workflow, graphic design, and digital imaging. His experience in connecting solutions to people comes from his time as an IT consultant and cybersecurity analyst in Western NY, as well as a career’s worth of focusing on the human side of technology. He came to KAS from his previous role as the Director of Information Technology for an independent school in Rochester, NY. Everyday, he uses his IT mettle to give students the best education experience possible while keeping KAS’s technology running smoothly and effectively. He’s happy to be surrounded by his family at KAS, with one KAS graduate and another in High School, as well as his wife Danielle, who teaches HS Chemistry. When he’s not on campus, Brian has continued his years of service as a volunteer firefighter and EMT in America, alongside the Kaohsiung City Fire Bureau as an EMT in Niaosong.

Ansel Wang Facilities Director

Ansel Wang graduated from Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, majoring in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Before becoming the Facilities Director at KAS, he worked for twelve years with Dream Mall in Kaohsiung. He loves to interact with the students, staff, and faculty. Ansel is married and has two sons. After work, he enjoys spending time with his family and traveling.

Jorge Arismendi Elementary Makerspace

A Colombian native, Jorge has previously called Malaysia and the USA home, cultivating a lifelong passion for cultural exchange. A curious and creative learner, he finds joy in music and art, while maintaining balance through road cycling and yoga.
Beyond his civil engineering background with a focus on sustainable design, Jorge brings 16 years of experience teaching languages, math, and science to the KAS community. Currently pursuing a Master’s in Education specializing in math and science, he is happy to share his experiences and co-learn STEAM alongside his students.

Araceli Arismendi Grade 4 Homeroom

Araceli is a dedicated educator with two decades of experience. Throughout her career, she has had the privilege of teaching students ranging from Kindergarten to 4th grade in diverse settings, including Houston, San Antonio, and internationally at The International School of Kuala Lumpur, where she dedicated ten years to nurturing young minds. Araceli’s commitment to education is further underscored by her Master’s in Education from the University of Texas.
Beyond the classroom, she is passionate about savoring delicious food, exploring new places, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. With two young and energetic boys, Matteo and Sevastian, who keep her on her toes, Araceli’s tries her best to work on her wellbeing as much as she can.

Sarah Buchanan Learning Support Paraprofessional

Sarah grew up on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, before beginning her journey abroad and moving to Taiwan in 2019 to teach English. What started as a new adventure quickly became a place she fell in love with, and she has continued to call Taiwan home ever since.

Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Bishop’s University in Quebec, as well as a teacher certification in Early Childhood Education. She is passionate about working with young learners and creating engaging, supportive environments where students can grow and thrive.

In her free time, Sarah enjoys photography, drawing, reading, and traveling. She loves exploring new places, spending time in the ocean, and discovering the unique stories and experiences each place has to offer.

Eileen Chang ES Visual Arts

Eileen Chang is a passionate educator with three years as a TA in the elementary at KAS. She is known for her interdisciplinary approach for blending art, storytelling and environmental themes.
With a background in ecological illustration, she has published numerous artworks and articles. Additionally, she has lectured on ecological illustration for over five years, using visual storytelling to foster environmental awareness. Eileen holds certifications in Elementary, STEM, and Environmental Education and is pursuing her IB (DP) Educator Certificate. She earned a Master’s in Environmental Management from the University of Queensland and previously worked as a researcher and science educator. She received the “EE 30 Under 30” award for leadership in Environmental Education.
Outside the classroom, Eileen enjoys playing guitar, skateboarding, swimming, and horseback riding. She and her husband share a love for animals and care for more than 30 pets—mostly reptiles—at home. Some of those pets have visited our classrooms and joined us at Dragon Camps in the summer!

Emma Chen Grade 5 Teaching Assistant

Emma Chen earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Care and Education from Cheng Shiu University. She has a Level C technician certificate for babysitting and worked in a local kindergarten as a teaching assistant prior to coming to KAS. She lives with her family in Kaohsiung.

Judy Chen Grade 5 Teaching Assistant

Judy Chen is a Kaohsiung native. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from FU-JEN Catholic University in Taiwan, and a teaching credential from Moreland University, USA. She is passionate about Korean Culture and Language. She is a native Taiwanese and Mandarin speaker, fluent in English, and has knowledge of Korean.
Ms. Chen believes in high expectations and love for all students. She spends time with her two sons, extended family, and friends. She loves gourmet food, camping, skateboarding, Karaoke, and Taichung Brothers’ baseball.

Melody Chen Kindergarten Homeroom

Melody Chen has a BA and an MA in Early Childhood Education from California State University, Los Angeles, United States. Melody is a certified Teacher in the state of California, maintains a “Child Development Site Supervisor Permit” credential from the state of California, and has credentials and teaching experience in Montessori schools in the United States. Ms. Melody has experience teaching Prekindergarten and kindergarten in Los Angeles and has been teaching kindergarten at KAS since 2000. She has been trained in and has experience teaching PYP, ELL Vocabulary Practice, Balanced Literacy and Writing Workshop. Melody is impassioned by early childhood education and has been very successful in developing early literacy in kindergarteners. She is committed to providing kindergarten students with a strong base for reading skills and getting children ready for Grade 1. Melody describes KAS as her second home and is proud to be a part of it!

Yu-Min Cheng ES Chinese

Yu-Min joined our KAS team as an ES Chinese teacher Prior to that, she taught Chinese to students from diverse backgrounds in Taiwan, the United States, and Poland. She holds a degree in Elementary Education with minors in Special Education and English Education from NPU, as well as an MA in Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language from NKNU. She is certified in elementary school education and TCSFL by the Education Ministry of Taiwan, and holds a certificate of TCFL from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU).
With many years experience teaching Chinese, Yu-Min is an enthusiastic and dedicated educator who incorporates technology and balanced literacy components (BLC) into her teaching. She also utilizes up-to-date and effective language teaching methodologies, including Teaching with Comprehensible Input (TCI), to facilitate language acquisition. Her teaching philosophy centers on creating a safe and engaging learning environment that promotes student motivation and caters to individual student needs.
In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Yu-Min actively engages in continuous professional development. She has completed various training programs and has presented and led workshops at several large-scale international school conferences.
In her free time, Yu-Min enjoys traveling, reading, hiking, and watching movies. She currently resides in Kaohsiung with her family.

Zoe Chu ES Health & Physical Education

Zoe has been a Pre-Kindergarten teaching assistant at KAS and was a co-teacher for several years before that.
Zoe grew up in Kaohsiung and she graduated from Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages with a major in English. She worked and studied in Australia to help improve her English and meet new friends before moving back to Taiwan.
During her spare time, she enjoys training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, going to the beach, traveling, and enjoying food and coffee with her friends.

Pinky Chung Kindergarten Teaching Assistant

Pinky Chung joined KAS as a teaching assistant in Grade 4 and now works as a teaching assistant in kindergarten. Pinky graduated from Chinese Cultural University in Taipei. She also studied for a year in Bournemouth, United Kingdom. Ms. Chung loves children and is very patient with students. Pinky enjoys reading and music very much. She also loves to spend time with her family.

Nicholas Felber EAL Coordinator

Nicholas is an experienced traveler and teacher who is joining Team Dragon from Cleveland, Ohio. He spent five years working in South Korea and earned a Master of Education with a focus in TESOL before returning to work for three years in New Orleans as part of the TeachNOLA program. Most recently, he has completed a Master of Art in Sociology of Education from NYU and been working in Cleveland’s public schools as a K-8 Multilingual Program Manager where he oversaw ESL programs at over 30 schools.

Nicholas has lived in South Korea, Chile, and Argentina so he speaks Korean and Spanish in addition to his native English. The opportunity to learn a new culture through the language is one of his favorite parts of traveling and living abroad. He loves to share this passion for language and culture with students and fellow teachers.

Other activities Nicholas enjoys are: rock climbing (including setting indoor bouldering routes), surfing, playing or watching soccer, snowboarding, dancing or singing tango, reading, and finding new places to eat. He cannot wait to share his passions with the KAS community!

James Gerber ES Health & Physical Education/Assistant Athletic Director

James Gerber is our Elementary Physical Education Teacher for Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. He also coaches Middle School Basketball and High School basketball at KAS. Before coming to KAS, he has worked in Honolulu, Hawaii USA as an Elementary PE teacher in the Department of Education of Schools in Hawaii, USA. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chaminade University and a Sports Coaching/Physical Education certification from the United States Sports Academy. He is a certified lifeguard and CPR/First Aid from the Chinese Taipei Water Life Saving Federation and Certified Athletic Sports Trainer from the International Sports Science Association. Growing up he lived in Hong Kong, China; Seoul, Korea; Taipei, Taiwan; Manila, Philippines; Shanghai, China; and Honolulu, United States. He attended various American International schools in Asia. His hobbies are playing basketball, watching movies, traveling and spending time with family.

Amy Hiser Grade 5 Homeroom

Amy is very excited to join the Dragon team as a Grade 5 homeroom teacher at Kaohsiung American School. Born and raised in Florida, USA, Amy earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Florida. She brings 10+ years of teaching experience from schools in the USA, South Korea, and Singapore. Amy is passionate about creating a supportive and engaging student-centered classroom where students feel encouraged to grow both academically and personally.

Outside the classroom, Amy enjoys running, exploring new places, and trying new foods. She is excited to become part of the KAS community!

Lynn Opitz-Hsiao Grade 2 Homeroom

Born and raised in Texas, Lynn’s journey as an educator has been shaped by a deep-seated love for cultural exchange. This passion first began during her time in the Peace Corps in Central Africa, an experience that transformed her perspective and sparked a lifelong love of travel. Currently, she is a 2nd grade homeroom teacher at the International School of Myanmar.

Her career is anchored in a continuous pursuit of knowledge and professional growth. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Master of Arts in Bilingual Education, both from the University of Texas. She also completed a Post-Graduate Education Program at the University of Phoenix.

On a personal note, she is a proud parent of two Third Culture Kids who were raised in Beijing and now reside in Austin, Texas. She is joined in her adventures by her husband, and together they look forward to their next chapter in Taiwan. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys quilting, cooking, and swimming, and is particularly excited about the prospect of exploring the beautiful beaches of Kenting National Park.

Hsin-Yi Hsu ES Music/Head of Department: ES Specials

Hsin Yi Hsu earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Tainan Teacher College, Taiwan, and her Master of Arts degree in Music Education with Kodaly Emphasis from Holy Name College in Oakland, California. She teaches elementary classroom music, elementary string orchestra, middle school music, and high school choir. Ms. Hsu is a certified MYP music teacher. Hsin Yi comes to us from another international school in Kaohsiung where she taught for 11 years. She is married and has two sons.

Naomi Huang Grade 2 Teaching Assistant

Naomi Huang joined as a teaching assistant in Grade 4. She earned her BA in Sports Medicine from Kaohsiung Medical University and worked as a trainer before joining KAS. In her role as an athletics trainer, Naomi has chaperoned ACAMIS soccer teams to Beijing. She is a certificated fitness trainer and has basic life support license. Naomi was born and raised in Kaohsiung where she lives with her family.

Jamie Hughes Grade 3 Homeroom

Jamie was born and raised in Nashville, TN. After getting her Bachelors in Psychology, she worked as a social worker and then as a probation officer before finding her true passion: education. After obtaining her Masters in Education, she taught middle school in Tennessee. She then moved to China, where she taught fifth grade at an international school.

Jamie loves to read and travel.

Dorothy Hung Grade 1 Homeroom

Dorothy joined KAS with extensive experience teaching in elementary school. Working with first graders is very rewarding for her as she enjoys watching her students learn to read and write. Dorothy began her teaching career in Los Angeles as a Grade 3 public school teacher. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics and a Master of Education degree, both from the University of Southern California. Dorothy holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with a BCLAD (bilingual, cross-cultural, language, and academic development) emphasis from the state of California. She is certified to teach elementary level students and ELL. Dorothy also has training and experience in PYP, Balanced Literacy, and Writing Workshop. Dorothy dedicates herself to creating a rich, nurturing learning environment, where she strives to develop confidence and enthusiasm for learning among her students. Dorothy is married with two adult sons who are both graduates of KAS. She is honored to be a part of the KAS family.

Chloé Johnson ES Counselor

Chloé Johnson was born in Nashville, Tennessee. She has been teaching for twelve years between Maine, Kentucky and Taiwan. She lives in Taiwan with her husband and forever puppy. Chloé has experience teaching ELL students from kindergarten up to tenth grade, as well as counseling experience. She has her degree in Special Education, and is passionate in using what she has learned to provide individualized support to the students she teaches. When out of the classroom, Chloé enjoys practicing Ashtanga Yoga, hiking, diving, snorkeling, and learning more about local history and culture. She has traveled to a number of countries in Asia in efforts to learn and experience more, including India, Malaysia, and Japan.

Melvin Johnson ES Counselor & Child Safeguarding Lead

Melvin Johnson is a school counselor and safeguarding leader with experience supporting students’ academic, social-emotional, and overall well-being in diverse school settings. He specializes in building comprehensive counseling programs and developing systems that promote student safety, early intervention, and positive school culture.

Melvin has experience providing individual and group counseling, delivering social-emotional learning (SEL) instruction, and collaborating with teachers, families, and leadership teams to support student success. He is particularly skilled in consultation and professional development, helping staff strengthen their ability to respond to student needs and contribute to a supportive learning environment.
In addition to his counseling work, Melvin has a strong interest in child protection and safeguarding practices. He is committed to fostering a proactive safeguarding culture through clear procedures, staff training, and data-informed decision-making. His approach emphasizes prevention, early identification, and consistent response to ensure student well-being remains central to school operations.

Olson Kelly Grade 5 Homeroom

Olson is excited to continue his work at Kaohsiung American School as a Grade 5 Homeroom teacher. Passionate about inquiry-based, student-centered learning, Olson is dedicated to helping students discover and take ownership of their unique identities as learners. Outside the classroom, he enjoys cooking and exploring new places, and has especially enjoyed experiencing the rich culture, food, and natural beauty of Taiwan.

Originally from the US state of California, Olson grew up in Austin, Texas. Before coming to Taiwan, he taught Grades 4 and 5 at IB schools in South Korea and Laos. He holds a Master’s in International Education, specializing in the PYP and MYP, from the University of Melbourne, and an advanced certificate in Teaching and Learning Research from the IB. In addition to his classroom role, Olson serves as an IB Workshop Leader and as a Visiting Team Member for WASC accreditation. His first career was in producing and casting for live theatre.

Kali Knudson Elementary Literacy and Instructional Coach

Originally from Oregon, Kali earned her bachelor’s degree in Human Services and Family Science, with double majors in Human Services and Early Childhood Education from Oregon State University. She then pursued her Master of Arts in Teaching. With many years of teaching experience spanning from pre-K to 6th grade, along with holding various Teacher Leader and Head of Department positions, Kali has developed a deep passion for literacy instruction and collaborative teaching practices. She is particularly enthusiastic about fostering a love for reading and writing in her students. Kali has received training in Reading and Writing Workshop and the Science of Reading. Currently enrolled in a Reading Specialist and Interventionist Graduate program, she is also honing her coaching skills as part of a coaching cohort dedicated to enhancing research-based literacy knowledge and coaching philosophies.

Outside of school, Kali enjoys exploring Kaohsiung with her husband, Jitesh, who is a Middle School science teacher at KAS, and their two young children. They love biking around the city, discovering new playgrounds, hiking, and spending time outdoors as a family. Kali’s personal interests include reading, traveling, and hiking, especially when shared with her loved ones.

Angela Kuo Grade 5 Homeroom & Grade 5 Head of Department

Angela is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, where she majored in Visual Arts and minored in Education Studies. She continued to obtain her teaching certificate in multiple subjects as well as a Master’s in Education from the University of California, San Diego. After teaching in the United States, Angela and her family decided to settle in Taiwan. She loves continuing her learning and teaching at KAS, while enjoying the endless adventures and yummy food that Taiwan has to offer. Some of her favorite things to do include water sports, making arts & crafts, and just spending time with loved ones.

Stephanie Kuo Grade 3 Teaching Assistant/Teaching Assistants Teacher Leader

Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Language, Literature and Linguistics. She is certified by the ministry of Education of Taiwan as a middle school and secondary school teacher of English. Before joining KAS, she was teaching in Taichung as an ESL teacher. She also has had leadership experience as head of the grade level team.
In her free time, Stephanie enjoys traveling, scuba diving, yoga, the beach and exploring new places.

Thaimma Lariosa PreKindergarten Homeroom

Thaimma, a Filipino-Australian, moved from Australia to Kaohsiung in 2024. She started her teaching career overseas and had the opportunity to work in international and IB schools in Medan and Jakarta, Indonesia, as well as in Suzhou, China. After spending 11 years abroad, Thaimma decided to explore other teaching roles in Australia, focusing on Early Years pedagogy and inclusive education. Over the past decade, she taught in both Early Years and Elementary schools in Queensland and her state, New South Wales.
With over 20 years of teaching experience, Thaimma is thrilled to celebrate her journey as an educator with the Dragon team in Kaohsiung. Teaching young children has always been her passion, and she is excited to continue this journey with KAS.
When she’s not at work, Thaimma enjoys gardening, going on nature walks, photographing landscapes and birds, trying different cuisines, and most of all, enjoying bubble tea, which is her favorite drink!

Michael Lavoy Grade 4 Homeroom

Born and raised among the prairies and boreal forests of Saskatchewan, Canada, Michael has spent most of his life being somewhere else. He has lived in England, Scotland, Australia, and now Taiwan, which has been home for the past 23 years.

He is joined by his partner, Sarah, and their two sons, Adrian (12) and Nolan (10).

Michael completed his undergraduate degree in archaeology at the University of Saskatchewan and went on to work in museums and did fieldwork while living in Canterbury in southeast England. Later, in Australia, he worked for Amnesty International. After years in archaeology and NGOs, he decided he needed a great deal more fame and money, so he went into teaching. He later earned his M.Ed. from The College of New Jersey and has been teaching at international schools for the past ten years.

These days, Michael spends his time raising his two boys (of whom he is very proud), traveling, reading actual paper books, and folding laundry with people still in it. He also holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Grace Lee earned her Bachelor Degree from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Kaohsiung City. She began at KAS as a teaching assistant for Grade 5, and now she is working with Grade 2 students. She also taught English in Kindergartens for two years in Kaohsiung and Pingtung City. She lives in Pingtung with her husband and an adorable daughter. She enjoys Crossfit Class.

Linda Lorenz ES English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Linda was born and raised in Minnesota, U.S.A., and received all her formal education there. She holds an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership, a M.Ed. in Teaching ESL, and a B.A. in Accounting. She also has current Minnesota education licensure in ESL K-12, Elementary Education K-6, and Principal K-12.

Linda has 26 years of comprehensive experience in education that has spanned the globe while focusing on young and multilingual learners. Linda has been an educator in Minnesota, Alaska, and Michigan. She has also spent eleven years abroad as an educator in Turkey, China, Singapore, and Mexico. Most recently, Linda has had the honor of being an English Language Fellow (a U.S. Department of State exchange program) in Mexico for two years. During this time, she focused on curriculum development, curriculum writing, teacher training, and English for Specific Purposes.

Linda is very passionate about her career and enjoys everything from inspiring students to collaborating with colleagues and considers herself to be a lifelong learner. In her free time, Linda loves to adventure out in the world, share beauty through photography, take lovely walks, shop for pretty things, and watch Netflix.

Sil will be joining KAS as a Learning Support Teacher! Originally from South Korea, she earned her master’s degree in special education from Syracuse University in the USA. With 18 years of experience as a learning support teacher, she has had the opportunity to teach in San Francisco and in international schools across Taipei, Shanghai, and Singapore. She is passionate about creating inclusive classrooms where every student is empowered, supported, and set up for success.

In her free time, Sil loves traveling, watching movies, listening to music, exploring new food, and enjoying a nice cup of coffee. She is excited to join the KAS community and can’t wait to explore all the adventures Kaohsiung has to offer!

Amber Lin Kindergarten Teaching Assistant

Amber Lin graduated from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. She started at KAS as a Grade 3 teaching assistant, before becoming a teaching assistant in Kindergarten. Amber has previous experience working as an athletic complex assistant. Amber loves cooking, baking, and spending time with her family.

Charlene Lin ES English Language Acquisition

Charlene loves working with children of all ages. Her excitement for learning is palpable in every classroom that she enters. Students also love learning with her. As an Elementary EAL teacher, Charlene shares her experience and helps children be successful and reach their goals.

Charlene holds a Masters in Special Education from Moreland University and is certified as a K-12 Special Education teacher in the US. She also carries certifications in TESOL and TCAFL, which helps her meet the diverse needs of her students. Previously, Charlene taught Kindergarten and worked in classrooms at I-Shou International School. She has been an integral part of the literacy support program at KAS. Her dedication to student success is evident in her daily interactions.

When she’s not creating engaging lessons for her students, Charlene is a busy mom of four and treasures the time she spends together with her family. As an avid reader and eager jetsetter, her activities provide a rich tapestry that she weaves into her classroom.

Estelle Lin Grade 3 Teaching Assistant

Estelle Lin, an experienced Mandarin teacher, is passionate about teaching the language and culture to students of all levels. With years of IBDP Mandarin/Chinese teaching experience, she has helped diverse students achieve fluency in Mandarin and develop a deep appreciation for Chinese culture.

Born and raised in Kaohsiung, Estelle's early fascination with language and culture led her to earn a bachelor's degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Soochaw University. Seeking a diverse experience, she embarked on a gap year in Lyon, immersing herself in a distinctive culture and language environment.

Living and studying abroad inspired Estelle to share Taiwanese culture and language with others. After earning a master's in Language Teaching and a credential teaching license from the National Kaohsiung Normal University, she continued teaching Mandarin to local and international students.

Previously teaching at Wells International School in Bangkok, Thailand, Estelle actively engages in the school community, organizing cultural events and workshops. During her work abroad, Estelle got her second master's in international teaching from Framingham State University, also with IBDP teaching qualifications.

Estelle enjoys joining professional gatherings or workshops, reading fun facts, and exploring new tech news or gadgets that could be applied at work; she also likes photography around the city in her leisure time.

Joyce Lin ES Chinese

Joyce Lin is from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and joined the KAS staff as a Chinese Teacher. Joyce earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Kaohsiung Normal University, Taiwan, and is certified by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. Joyce received IB training and certification related to Inquiry-based teaching and assessments. Before coming to KAS, she taught as an MYP teacher for ten years and was the head of the Chinese Department at a Bilingual IB school. Joyce loves traveling, reading, watching movies, and being with family. She lives with her family in Kaohsiung and appreciates their continuous support.

Ellen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from NPUST (National Pingtung University Science of Technology). In her years at KAS she has been a Pre-Kindergarten teaching assistant, a teaching assistant in G4, worked in the library, and now works in ES Chinese. Ellen is married and has a young daughter.

Originally from the southern United States, Hannah completed her BS in Psychology and MA in Counseling before moving to Taiwan.

In her previous role as School Counselor in Taipei, she implemented and coordinated the Learning Support program for exceptional students. She has many years experience working with children, including former positions as Refugee Program Specialist and Tutor for students with intensive academic, social/emotional, and language needs. Throughout her career, she has worked with students with the most intensive behavioral and academic challenges. She is licensed as an Associate Professional Counselor, School Counselor, and Special Education teacher, all in the United States. Her classroom teaching experience includes AP Psychology, Introductory Psychology, and Life Skills. She is passionate about advocacy, inclusivity, and creating spaces that support all students in accessible education.

A fitness enthusiast, she spends her free time doing CrossFit with her Taiwanese husband. Additionally, she enjoys cooking, traveling, cultural experiences, as well as professional and academic pursuits.

Poppy Morgan Grade 3 Homeroom

Poppy is delighted to be joining the KAS Dragons this year as a Grade 3 homeroom teacher. Having been part of the school community for the past five years as a teacher spouse, parent, and substitute teacher, she is excited to now step back into a full-time teaching role. She is passionate about transdisciplinary learning and enjoys using the arts to enrich understanding, inspire creativity, and support the growth of thoughtful, empathetic, and curious learners.

Originally from the UK, Poppy completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Nottingham and trained as an elementary teacher at the University of Manchester. She brings ten years of teaching experience in the UK, Korea, Qatar, and the Philippines, primarily in upper elementary, as well as volunteer experience in India. Poppy recently completed a master’s degree in Character Education with the University of Birmingham and is eager to apply her newfound insights in the classroom next year.
Outside of school, Poppy enjoys singing, playing musical instruments, spending time in nature, and a good board game- although these days, most of her time at home is spent with her three wonderful young children.

Michelle Sayre ES Learning Support

Michelle is excited to join Kaohsiung American School as an Elementary Learning Support Coordinator. She comes to the KAS community with vast experience, having taught in California, Guatemala, Egypt, Bahrain, and Venezuela. Beginning her career as an elementary classroom teacher and later becoming a Learning Support teacher, Michelle understands the importance of building strong relationships within teaching teams, as well as with students and their families. She is passionate about removing barriers to allow all students to access the curriculum in positive and meaningful ways.

Michelle is originally from Ohio and earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education at The Ohio State University. Outside of teaching, Michelle enjoys being in nature, swimming, reading, attending sporting events and concerts, and traveling to new places to learn about cultures, history, and food.

Vivi Sun Grade 1 Teaching Assistant

Vivi joined the KAS family as a teaching assistant in Grade 1. She earned her MA in IMBA from National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology. She went to Germany as an exchange student when she was studying in graduate school. She worked in cram schools as a teacher, and also worked in an e-commerce company for prior to KAS. She loves to travel, exercise, and climb the mountains in her free time with her family and friends. Vivi is married and lives with her husband in Kaohsiung.

Megan Taylor Kindergarten Homeroom

Megan is excited to join the Dragon team as the kindergarten homeroom teacher at Kaohsiung American School. Having previously lived in Kaohsiung more than 10 years ago, she has always considered the city a second home and is thrilled to return to the community she loves. She is especially looking forward to mornings that begin with a cheese dan bing and bubble tea.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Megan began her teaching career in Asia after graduating from university in 2011. Over the past 13 years, she has taught kindergarten in international and public school settings across Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, California, and Illinois. Much of her experience has been within IB PYP schools, where she has served as a kindergarten homeroom teacher dedicated to creating joyful, student-centered learning environments that nurture curiosity, independence, and a love of learning.

Outside the classroom, Megan enjoys running, working out, traveling, and spending time outdoors in nature. She also loves relaxing with a good book by the beach and is excited to once again call Kaohsiung home.

Jenny Tsai is from Kaohsiung, one of a family of seven. She earned her Master of Arts degree from Kaohsiung Normal University in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, and her Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Literature, Certification for Teaching Education program of Elementary school. Jenny has her certification in Elementary Education, Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. Before coming to KAS, Jenny taught in Taipei FuHsing(復興) private school (Bilingual Department), at the NSYSU Chinese language center, and at JingXin(靜心) private school as a homeroom teacher. During off-work hours, she likes gardening, reading, and play the guitar.

Liz Tsai Grade 1 Teaching Assistant

Liz grew up in Taiwan before spending 12 formative years living in South Africa, moving back home shortly before COVID. Since 2020, she has been bringing her passion and warmth to the classroom as a kindergarten teacher. Liz genuinely loves working with young learners - the infectious, vibrant energy they bring to school every day constantly sparks her own inner child and makes teaching an absolute joy.

When she isn't inspiring her students, Liz is an avid outdoor enthusiast who loves taking full advantage of nature. On weekends, you’ll most likely find her free diving in the clear waters of Xiaoliuqiu or head-first into a camping trip high up in the mountains with her friends.

Katy Tseng ES Chinese

Katy Tseng is from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and joined KAS as a Grade 1 teaching assistant. She earned both her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Education in Taiwan. Before coming to KAS, she taught as a PYP teacher at a bilingual school. Katy loves yoga, traveling, and being with her family. She lives in Kaohsiung with her husband and two children.

Prior to joining KAS, Samantha served in a variety of teaching and leadership roles in the Bellevue School District located in Washington State. She is a proud multilingual educator who understands the linguistic development of her students and applies research-based strategies to support language growth through vivid content instructions. As an advocate for student well-being, her primary focus is to foster a safe and welcoming environment where everyone can feel heard and seen.
Samantha was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and moved to the U.S. after graduating from college. After living and working abroad for 16 years, she decided to relocate back to her her home country to be closer to her family. Outside of her professional role, Samantha enjoys traveling to new places, watching movies, observing wildlife, practicing yoga, and meditating.

Alexander Washko Grade 1 Homeroom

Originally from Atlanta, Alexander lived in Korea, Macau, Mexico, and Briazil and worked in international schools for 15 years before returning to the United States to gain some local experience in public schools and plan his next chapter. He joined the KAS community in 2024.
Alex is an elementary teacher with a passion for teaching literacy; he received his Master’s in Elementary Education with a focus on emergent literacy in 2016 and continues his studies to this day. Having spent nearly 11 years in First Grade, Alex is excited to return to his roots and get involved in KAS’s elementary literacy program in a trailblazing way, ensuring student success.
When not in the classroom, Alex is a musician and writer who finds himself happiest walking around a crowded city searching for a good meal and trying out new languages.

Maggie holds her Master of Education from Ashland University, Ohio, and also a teaching credential for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Prior to coming to KAS, Maggie worked as an English teacher in local kindergartens for years. She loves to travel and hang out with family and friends. She also loves music and movies.

Patrick Severijns Middle School Principal

Patrick Severijns will join the KAS Dragons as the new Middle School Principal for the 2026–27 school year. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Patrick has dedicated his career to working in international middle schools across the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. He earned a Bachelor of Education in K–12 Physical Education and later completed a Master of Education in Advanced Studies and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Management. Throughout his journey, he has worked at institutions such as United World College Maastricht, Zurich International School, and the American School in London. Most recently, he served as Head of the Middle Years Programme and Deputy Head of School at the International School Groningen.

After years of leading and learning together alongside diverse international school communities, Patrick is excited to begin his next chapter in Kaohsiung. As the incoming Middle School Principal, he sees the middle school years as a unique and energising bridge, where the curiosity and unbridled enthusiasm of the lower school meet the growing thirst for knowledge of high school. He looks forward to working closely with students, families, faculty and staff to build a warm, inclusive culture where everyone feels supported and challenged to thrive.

In his free time, Patrick enjoys various sports (CrossFit, snowboarding, squash, and more), taking long walks with his dog, Floki, sampling local cuisine, and exploring different countries and cultures with his wife, Janne. He eagerly anticipates learning what it means to be a Dragon and to explore the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan and the region to its fullest.

Laura Buchan MS/HS Theatre

Laura is very excited to take on the theatre program at KAS! Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, she completed her theatre degree at the University of Victoria and proceeded to perform educational theatre in national parks all over western Canada. She went on to get her Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia, taught in Canadian public schools, and most recently has been teaching drama in Tunis, Tunisia.

With dual passions for both the arts and the outdoors, Laura likes to spend her free time cycling, hiking, and generally exploring the world in active ways. She first visited Taiwan in 2017, when she completed the “Formosa 900” - cycling the coast of the entire island! She is thrilled to be back in a new capacity. As a teacher, Laura is passionate about interdisciplinary learning, using theatre to build lifelong skills, and encouraging students to be creative risk-takers.

The most important thing in Laura’s life is a dog named Theo, and he is excited to move to Taiwan too, although he doesn’t really understand the concept.

Kimberly Butler Music

Kimberly is thrilled to be joining the KAS Middle-School community for the 2026-2027 school year. Originally from Waterloo, Ontario, she studied Music and English at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University before completing her Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University and her Master of Education at the University of Toronto.

She began her teaching career in Pickering, Ontario, working as a Grade 6 homeroom and Instrumental Music teacher. In 2002, Kimberly and her husband packed up for what they thought would be a short, two year adventure in Saudi Arabia. That “short adventure” turned into 23 years of living, learning, and teaching abroad, and she hasn’t stopped exploring since. During her time there, she taught Grade 8 Language Arts and Social Studies and served as the Grade 6–12 Instrumental Music Director.

For the past decade, Kimberly and her family have been living and working in Hong Kong, and they’re excited for their next chapter in Taiwan. Joining KAS with her husband, Dr. David Butler, she’ll also be accompanied by two of their three children: Bryant (13) and Lara (16), who will both be joining the KAS community. Their oldest daughter will continue her studies at the University of Waterloo.

When she’s not in the classroom, Kimberly enjoys going to the theatre, discovering great food spots, baking treats that have a habit of disappearing quickly, crafting (sometimes with glitter-related consequences), reading—especially anything by L. M. Montgomery—and planning future travels.

She is looking forward to meeting her students, building a warm and creative classroom community, and sharing a year full of learning, laughter, and memorable moments.

Rosa Carbajal MYP Mathematics

Rosa, a native of Los Angeles, California, brings over 20 years of teaching experience to the classroom. Having spent 15 of those years abroad, she has enriched the lives of students in England, Latvia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Spain, Singapore, Ecuador, and soon Taiwan. She is thrilled to share her passion and curiosity for math with the Dragon community!
When not in the classroom, you’ll find Rosa exploring the great outdoors through running, hiking, and cycling. She relishes seeking new challenges and experiences.

Kyle Cripe MYP Health & Physical Education

Kyle Cripe is a K-12 certified Physical Educator. He has taught in Korea, and Bulgaria. Kyle was born and raised in West Papua, Indonesia. His parents work at an International school there. Kyle earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education K-12 from Palm Beach Atlantic University. He went to teach in Korea after graduating from University. He has taught Physical Education and health in the elementary, middle, and high school levels. His goal for Physical Education is to provide students a safe environment where they can engage in as many different types of sports and activities as possible in hopes of finding something they enjoy and will engage in for life. He values the development of teamwork, social interaction, and communication skills as these are things that can transfer to all areas of education and life. In his free time Kyle enjoys playing sports, hiking, and traveling.

Nicholas De Dios MYP Design

Nicholas is excited to join KAS this year as the MYP Design teacher! Originally from New York, USA, he has spent the past several years teaching and working in international schools across Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Hungary. With a passion for innovation and creativity, Nicholas is dedicated to helping students develop problem-solving skills and hands-on learning experiences through design and technology.

He holds a Master of Educational Technology from Lamar University and brings a strong background in integrating technology into the classroom. Outside of teaching, Nicholas enjoys traveling, photography, and staying active through fitness. He is looking forward to exploring Kaohsiung and learning more about the local culture, people, and traditions. Nicholas is excited to become part of the KAS community and inspire students to think critically and design with purpose!

Gulian Fang MYP and HS Chinese Language Acquisition

Gulian is excited to continue being a member of the KAS community in her new role as MYP and HS Chinese Language Acquisition teacher. She joined the KAS family as a 4th grade TA and has served as a TA leader.

Prior to KAS, Gulian had various experiences in teaching Mandarin. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and worked as the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at Western Kentucky University. Gulian also has experience working as a Mandarin teacher in both the Critical Language Scholarship program and the Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program. Currently, she is pursuing her Masters degree in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language at National Kaohsiung Normal University and continuing her professional development through the IB program.

Gulian has a great enthusiasm for education, as demonstrated through her various roles in teaching English and Chinese as a Second Language through the years.

Celine Fournier MYP Art/Head of Department: Arts

Celine Fournier joined the KAS community in 2021 and is teaching IB MYP Visual Art. She has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a focus on painting and animation. She completed her MPhil in Arts, Creativity, and Education at the University of Cambridge with Distinction and received a "Best Dissertation Award". She is certified in Pre-K to 12 Art and TESOL. She is also trained in MYP Visual Art and Design. Passionate about art and education, she worked as an Education Assistant at the Chicago Artists Coalition where she participated in curriculum planning and management for emerging artists. Celine is also a visual artist who paints fragments of her everyday life and constructs them into irregular-shaped self-portraits. Her works have been exhibited in various art fairs and galleries around Taiwan and the USA. In her leisure time, Celine enjoys strolling in nature, working on paintings and ceramics, as well as visiting art museums and galleries. As a KAS alumna, she is thrilled to be back!

Todd Fu MYP Japanese

Todd is a lively and dynamic teacher who loves exploring different cultures, histories, and cuisines. He enjoys traveling and experiencing new things independently. He is committed to creating an engaging and interactive learning environment. He uses games and situational teaching to set clear learning objectives and provide guidance, ensuring students find their learning experience meaningful and enjoyable.
Todd holds an A.A. degree in Japanese from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages and has obtained the JLPT N1 certification. Additionally, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Chinese from the same institution. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at National Kaohsiung Normal University, where he is also studying the IB curriculum.
Todd’s teaching journey began during his university years, when he tutored students in both Chinese and Japanese. He started as a Chinese intern teacher at KAS, and transitioned to teaching Japanese. He has expanded his role to include teaching Chinese as well. These diverse teaching experiences have equipped him with the ability to effectively inspire and support his students’ learning enthusiasm.

Chikako Fukuyo MYP/DP Japanese

Chikako graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Teaching degree. Chikako then became a certified Japanese Language Teacher by completing training from New Global Language Training Center in Tokyo. She teaches Middle and High School Japanese. Chikako has been trained in the MYP and in both IBDP Japanese B and Ab-Initio. Chikako has a husband and two children, and enjoys cooking and traveling with them.

Chris Howey MYP Language & Literature

Chris is excited to join KAS as a Middle School English Language and Literature teacher. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, he has spent most of his teaching career in Asia, with a brief stopover in Europe, having lived and worked in Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, and, most recently, Lithuania. Chris brings extensive experience in the MYP across several subjects, including English Language and Literature, Media, Design, and Individuals and Societies.

Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in English and Geography from Simon Fraser University, as well as a Bachelor of Education degree and a Master of Educational Technology degree from the University of British Columbia. He also holds a diploma in Media Arts, specializing in photography and film.

In his free time, Chris enjoys taking photographs and exploring new and exciting places, both locally and abroad. He also enjoys reading about different cultures and places, as well as exploring culture through local cuisine. Chris is thrilled to join the KAS community and looks forward to inspiring a love of learning, literature, and global perspectives in his students.

Nancy Huang Middle School Secretary

Nancy Huang is the middle school secretary and works at the KAS reception desk. Before she transitioned to the main office, she worked as a library assistant, then as prekindergarten and Grade 5 assistant. Nancy graduated from Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages where she majored in English. Nancy enjoys working with students and parents, helping answer their questions, translating, chaperoning trips, or supporting our teachers. In her free time, Nancy enjoys eating out with friends and family.

Pierre Ice MYP Mathematics

Pierre is originally from New Mexico but attended university in Texas. He has a large extended family with six siblings and seven nieces and nephews. Over the past nine years, Pierre has taught various middle school subjects, including math, science, and design, with experience teaching in China and Texas. As a teacher, he strives to maintain a positive classroom climate where students feel comfortable expressing themselves, and he delivers engaging lessons that promote independent thought and problem-solving skills.
In his free time, Pierre enjoys traveling the world, trying new foods, and playing chess, xiangqi, and other board games. He is also learning salsa dance, and has recently tried scuba diving for the first time.

Hui Ting Jiang MYP Math

Ting is excited to join KAS as a Middle School Math Teacher. Born in China and raised in New York, she brings a global perspective and a passion for inquiry, inclusion, and sustainability to her classroom. She holds a Master of Science in Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Ting discovered her love for teaching as a Teach For America corps member in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she saw firsthand the power of education to transform families.

Study abroad experiences in India and Argentina deepened her curiosity about cultures and languages. She discovered that birthday traditions vary widely (in India, the birthday person treats everyone!) and that even avocados go by different names (palta in Argentina instead of aguacate). She became fascinated by the subtle differences that shape how people experience the world. These experiences sparked her ongoing love of travel and cross-cultural learning.

Outside of school, Ting enjoys searching for great coffee, trying new restaurants, reading, and exploring new places with her partner, Pierre. She is the proud mom of two poodles, Archie and Hongcha. Ting looks forward to becoming part of the KAS community.

Gloria Kao MYP Chinese

Gloria Kao is a longtime teacher at KAS. Gloria holds a teaching degree from the ‘Department of Chinese Language and Culture for International Students’ at National Taiwan Normal University. Gloria has been trained in DP Literature, MYP Language & Literature, and CAS. Gloria previously served as the DP CAS Coordinator. Gloria has a strong passion for community outreach and community service and enjoys sharing this with students in her role as High School Community Service Coordinator. In addition, Gloria leads the KAS Community Service Club, Orphanage Club, Red Cross Club, Zonta clubs, Charity Art Club, Food Bank Donation, and Shou-Shan ES Teaching Club. Outside of school, Gloria enjoys listening to classical music and operas, as well as visiting museums.

Sam King MYP Language & Literature

Sam is an educator with nearly two decades of experience in language and literature. Rooted in the theory of composition and the principles of mindfulness, he is certified in English Language Arts, Special Education, and as an RYT 200 yoga instructor. He helps students find their voice, build confidence, and think independently so they can shape their own path and ultimately choose their destiny. He has taught in the United States, Kazakhstan, Shanghai, and now Kaohsiung.

Kolas MYP & Personal Project Coordinator/MYP Language & Literature

Stephen “Kolas” Yang has been part of the KAS community since 2020 and has served as the MYP Coordinator since 2022. In this role, he has guided the school through IB Middle Years Programme accreditation, curriculum development and documentation, and worked to deepen community understanding of IB principles. He has more than 17 years of teaching experience in English/Language arts, Special Education, and English as a Second Language, including teaching AP English in Boston Public Schools. Currently, Kolas teaches Grade 7 (MYP Y2) Language and Literature at KAS. 
Beyond the classroom, Kolas was a founding member of Envision Formosa, KAS’s outdoor education program launched in 2023. A passionate endurance athlete, he competes in marathons and full-Ironman triathlons across Taiwan, and established both the cycling and triathlon clubs at KAS, mentoring students through regular training sessions. Kolas earned his Master of Education from the University of Massachusetts through the Boston Teacher Residency and holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Honors from the University of Rhode Island Honors Program. He is a licensed professional teacher with certifications in English, ESL, and Special Education.

Irene Lee MYP/DP Chinese

Irene Lee joined KAS as a high school Chinese teacher. She holds an M.Ed degree from National Kaohsiung Normal University. She has been trained in DP Literature, Language & Literature, and MYP Language & Literature courses. She has a strong passion for all classical and contemporary literature, and also enjoys sharing this with students in her role. Before coming to KAS, she taught as a DP/MYP teacher for many years. She has two lovely children; an older girl and a younger boy. She loves to travel, reading, watch movies, and be with her family.

John is an MYP/DP Language & Literature trained and experienced teacher. John earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at National Changhua University of Education and has his certificate from the Education Ministry of Taiwan. Mr. Lin has many years of experience as an international school teacher. When not in school, John likes to watch different kinds of movies and dramas. That gives him lots of inspiration for teaching.

Maria Lopez MYP/DP Spanish

Originally from Spain, Maria began her international journey during her university years, spending several summers in France and the United Kingdom working as an au pair, experiences that sparked a lasting passion for intercultural understanding. Although she initially studied Journalism and began her professional career in the media sector, her strong interest in languages and cultures led her to pursue a degree in Translation and Interpreting and, ultimately, a career in language education.

In 2013, Maria moved with her family to the United States, where she taught Spanish and French for five years in a diverse and multicultural environment. Eager to further expand her international teaching experience, she joined an international school in Mumbai, India, in 2018. By June 2026, she will have completed eight years there, teaching Spanish and French in both the MYP and DP programmes.

Grateful for her life and school community in Mumbai, Maria is excited to begin a new chapter as she joins the KAS family this year.
Outside the classroom, she enjoys reading and writing, staying active through fitness and running, playing table tennis, hiking, dancing, meeting new people, and exploring local cuisines. She especially looks forward to discovering Taiwan’s rich culinary culture.

Sarah Marks MYP Science

Sarah is very excited to join the KAS community. Growing up, she loved to explore the world around her, which quickly led to her love of science. Sarah started her teaching career in New York at a charter high school, where she became passionate about providing meaningful and challenging learning experiences in the science classroom. After spending her entire life living in New York City, Sarah moved to Mexico City where she taught MYP Science for three years. Most recently, she has been living and working in China for the past four years, implementing project based learning in her science classroom.

Sarah earned her Bachelor of Arts in Geology from Carleton College and her Master of Arts in Teaching from the American Museum of Natural History. Outside of teaching, Sarah enjoys traveling to new places, exploring nature, eating good food, reading, and playing board games.

Cindy Matheson Middle School Learning Support

Cindy is a Canadian certified teacher originally from Toronto, Ontario, with a diverse teaching background. Her teaching practice began in Mexico, spending three years internationally before returning to Toronto to deepen her teaching practices in both Elementary and Middle School grades. Middle school education has been where I have spent the majority of my 25-year career. Whether teaching a contained gifted class spanning grades 6 to 8 or serving as a generalist teacher in grades 7 and 8, I thrive in the environment of middle school.
Beyond the classroom, Cindy is an active individual who enjoys spending time in nature and she’s always up for a new adventure.

Jeremy Melton MYP Design

Born in Taipei and raised as a global citizen, Jeremy is an international STEAM and Design educator whose career has taken him across the USA, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Singapore. Some in the community may remember him from his earlier years teaching at KAS between 2006 and 2011. Throughout his career, he has taught widely across STEM and the sciences—including MYP Science, STEM, AP Biology, IGCSE Sciences, IB Biology, and ESS—while helping shape innovative STEAM, design thinking, and coding programs.

He is currently completing a Doctorate in Education focused on advancing creativity and critical thinking through Multicultural Education and STEAM approaches, integrating diverse cultural perspectives with inquiry‑driven design.

Outside the classroom, Jeremy is an avid cyclist, traveler, reader, and lifelong learner—bringing curiosity, global awareness, and a spirit of exploration into every learning environment he creates.

Laurel Mittelman MS English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Laurel is excited to join the Dragon team as a Middle School EAL teacher. A lifelong military brat, she grew up collecting postcards of memories across the east coast of the United States and beyond, following her family wherever the next adventure led. After attending high school on Okinawa as a fellow Dragon, Asia claimed a permanent spot in her heart, and she’s thrilled to now call Taiwan her next home.

She earned her BA in Spanish and M.Ed. in Wisconsin, where she taught Spanish and learned firsthand how many layers a good winter coat really needs. Once she’d had her fill of the frozen tundra, Laurel packed her bags for Ecuador, spending several years immersed in volunteer and NGO work. Her travels later brought her back to the east coast and English Language Development, where she teamed up with her partner, Adam Walter, who will be joining the Dragon community as an MYP Math teacher, before she set off for Morocco.
When she’s not in the classroom, Laurel can usually be found chasing waterfalls and viewpoints, dancing whenever music appears, staying active, and sampling street food with fearless enthusiasm.

Clint Munkholm MYP Math

Clint hails originally from Alberta, Canada. While he graduated with a B.Sc. in Ecology, his career has included a broad array of experience, including Environmental Education, Ecological Design, Electrical Engineering, and the design of green buildings. He has teaching experience in both public and private schools, community colleges, and via his own hands-on maker workshop, working with children to develop the skills needed to design and build their own creations. He is passionate about helping students practically apply their learning.
Clint, a “Tainan son-in-law”, is a longtime member of the KAS family, with two sons who are KAS alumni, and his daughter a student. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking, fermenting, rooftop gardening, community composting, and aquaponics.

Vincent Pan MYP Health & Physical Education/Head of Department: Physical & Health Education

Vincent Yusheng Pan was born and raised in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He came to KAS as a teacher assistant in 2018. He holds a bachelor's degree from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages and completed the teacher preparation program from Moreland University. He is currently a Physical Education graduate student at the University of Arkansas. He is a certified lifeguard and holds international and national coaching licenses for swimming, and the coaching licenses in Volleyball issued by Taiwan. He loves to play sports, such as tennis, volleyball, and surfing.

Renee Parish MYP Individuals & Societies

Renee is excited to join the KAS community in 2026, she brings a passion for fostering learning and engagement. She is an experienced educator with over 20 years of teaching in both China and the United States. She has taught a variety of subjects including Individuals and Societies, history, English, math, special education and athletics.

Originally from the U.S., she enjoys basketball, hiking, theater, museums, and music in her spare time. A proud mother of two, she recently celebrated her son’s marriage, marking a joyful new chapter in her family's life. She looks forward to every new adventure and embraces the learning experiences life brings her.

Jitesh Pattni MYP Science

Jitesh teaches MYP Science. He brings with him 11 years of experience as a fisheries biologist on the Oregon coast where he led the research of salmonid population dynamics and harvest rates to ensure a sustainable future for the species. He received his BA in Environmental Studies and Economics from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, is working on completing his Master’s in Education. When Jitesh isn’t on campus, he helps organize the Kaohsiung Ultimate League and can often be found on the ultimate frisbee field. You’ll frequently spot him in his wife Kali’s office, or playing with his amazing children, Ilia and Grey, in Aozihdi Park.

Pon Peng MS Teaching Assistant

Pon Peng was born and raised in Kaohsiung and loves this city very much. She earned her BA in Applied Foreign Languages from SUE-TE University in Kaohsiung City. Pon worked as a teaching assistant for several years in elementary school before her role as a MS teaching assistant. Pon combined work and travel by working in the United States during the summers she was studying in university. She worked in Colorado in a peach factory; in Ohio for at Cedar Point Amusement Park; and at Los Angeles International Airport as a ground service agent for EVA Air. Pon then went to Canada and worked in Vancouver. She really enjoys working with children at KAS and thinks of KAS as her second family.

Melanie Sanchez MYP/DP Language & Literature

Melanie is an experienced English Language and Literature teacher with a passion for her subject and a deep appreciation for diversity and inclusivity, gained through her extensive international experience across four continents. She believes that language and critical thinking are fundamental in shaping both individuals and the world, and she fosters a safe and inclusive environment in her classroom where students feel comfortable sharing and exploring diverse perspectives.

Melanie holds a Master of Education from Seattle University, complementing her Degree in German, and speaks fluent German with an Austrian dialect. She believes that effective communication is built on understanding, empathy, and trust.

Melanie has relocated to Kaohsiung with her husband, Martin Machata, and is excited to join the KAS community. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, outdoor activities, and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Winnie Shen MS Counselor/Head of Counseling Department

Winnie Shen holds a M.ED and an Ed.S. in Marriage and Family Counseling from the Counselor Education, University of Florida. With many years of clinical experience in working with children, adolescents, and adults at various settings including a school, a hospital, and a college counseling center, she is very enthusiastic about interacting with students as well as helping and supporting them when they are in need. Winnie was a National Certified Counselor in the US, and is a certified Counseling Psychologist in Taiwan. She was born and raised in Kaohsiung and grew up in a lovely family that enjoys travel. When she visits or lives in other cities or countries, she embraces diversity and cherishes every moment that she gets to learn from other cultures. She is honored to be a counselor at KAS and loves to work in this great and diverse community in her hometown.

Marcelo Ventrice MYP/DP Spanish

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Marcelo is an international educator with over 15 years of experience within the International Baccalaureate. He holds a Master’s degree in Modern Languages and Literature and began his career teaching Spanish A in Argentina before continuing his professional journey in Paris, and later Barcelona, as well as teaching remotely in Chile and Switzerland. He is also an official IB Spanish A Examiner with more than a decade of experience.

In addition to Spanish A, Marcelo teaches IB Film and has a strong interest in visual storytelling and narrative. Alongside his school work, he supports IB teachers and students through tailored programs, workshops, and mentoring as part of his independent educational project.

Beyond the classroom, Marcelo is a certified yoga teacher, having trained in India, Spain, and Thailand. He brings this reflective and somatic perspective into his teaching philosophy, valuing presence, balance, and thoughtful engagement with learning, and often incorporates mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation practices to support students—especially during high-pressure IB periods.

In his free time, Marcelo enjoys traveling, walking, reading, watching films, and exploring the intersections between movement and art.

Annette Walker MYP Language & Literature

Annette Walker will be joining the school this year as a Middle School Language and Literature educator. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., USA, Annette brings a wealth of experience teaching across the IB continuum, with a strong background in inquiry-based instruction and project-based learning. She is coming to KAS after teaching in southeast India for the past four years. She is passionate about supporting students as they explore their identity, relationships, and personal expression through literature and writing.

Annette holds both a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Education, with her doctoral specialization in multicultural pedagogy focusing on the importance of diversity, inclusion, and culturally relevant literature. Throughout her career, she has worked with a wide range of learners, designing engaging units that emphasize critical thinking, global perspectives, and authentic learning experiences.

In her free time, Annette enjoys reading, dancing, and exploring cultures through the culinary arts.

Adam Walter MYP Math

Adam will join KAS this year as an MYP Math teacher, bringing with him 20 years of teaching experience and a deep commitment to lifelong learning. A New Jersey native at heart, Adam has spent the past 26 years living in a beautiful suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned both his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s of Education from Holy Family University and has been dedicated to education since his early days growing up in the Garden State.

Adam will be joined at KAS by his partner, Laurel Mittelman, who will serve as the new Middle School EAL teacher. His son, Mason, is about to embark on his college journey, studying engineering and architecture, and is especially excited about future visits to Taiwan.
Outside of the classroom, Adam enjoys staying active and exploring new interests. His hobbies include walking, hiking, biking, going to the park or pool, spending time at the beach, working out at the gym, hip-hop dancing, and playing basketball and golf. He also loves reading, writing, cooking, and telling jokes. A devoted sports fan, Adam proudly roots for (almost) all Philadelphia teams: Go Birds! Go Sixers! Go Phillies! Go Union!, and, of course, the New Jersey Devils.

Wendy Weng MS English Language Acquisition

Wendy joined KAS as an elementary ELL teacher. She graduated from Fu-Jen Catholic University with a BA in English Literature and earned her MA in Education from the University of Texas. She has certification in English and ELL teaching from Montana State University and has training and experience in MYP. Wendy currently teaches middle and high school ELL. She loves working with ELL students; she is always amazed at how much progress students can make and feels proud of them. When not working, Wendy enjoys spending time with her husband and son.

Dr. David Butler High School Principal

David Butler will join KAS this year as the new High School Principal for the 2026-27 school year. Originally from Canada, David received both his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Education degrees from Queen's University and graduated with a Master of Philosophy degree in European History from the University of Cambridge in the UK. He earned a second master's degree and his EdD, both in Educational Leadership, from Western University

David began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Canada before spending thirteen years as a teacher, department head, and Assistant Principal at American School of Dhahran in Saudi Arabia and over ten years as Vice Principal and Principal at Canadian International School of Hong Kong. David’s professional interests include authentic methods of assessing student learning, promoting student agency, and developing leadership amongst the teaching faculty. He is drawn to KAS by the school’s belief in a holistic education that emphasizes academic achievement, personal growth and character and is excited to support its strong IB programs.

Also joining as KAS Dragons will be David’s wife, Kimberly, who will teach in the Middle School, as well as their youngest two children and two housecats. David’s hobbies include cooking (and dining), playing Dungeons and Dragons, and reading history and fiction. He can’t wait to discover all that Kaohsiung and Taiwan have to offer!

Godwin Amedume DP Economics

Godwin comes from Ghana. He has many years of experience teaching economics at the high school level including IGCSE and IBDP Economics (HL/SL). He is certificated as a professional teacher from the University of Cape Coast where he obtained a Bachelor of Education (Social Studies), with a focus in Economics. Godwin incorporates concept-based and inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning into his lessons. He also has significant experience as a DP Economics examiner.

Godwin has a lot of interest in CAS, debating economic issues, and playing tennis during his leisure hours. He is happily married with five (older) children and his family lives in Tema, Ghana.

Prerna Bidalia MYP Language & Literature

Prerna Bidalia is an Indian citizen, born and raised in Delhi, India. In 2015, she moved to Bangalore, which she has proudly called home for the past decade. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Delhi University and a Master's degree from Christ University, graduating with first division honors in both. Currently, she is pursuing an M.Ed from the European International University, Paris.

With six years of experience teaching English Language and Literature, Prerna has worked extensively with the IB-MYP and IGCSE curriculum. She is certified in TEFL and holds an IB-MYP Category 2 certification, which further supports her learner-centered and inquiry-driven teaching philosophy.

In addition to her classroom experience, Prerna has been actively involved in whole-school initiatives such as Design Thinking projects and the curation of interdisciplinary field trips that connect academic learning with real-world experiences. She is passionate about creating culturally responsive, engaging, and inclusive learning environments.

Outside of education, Prerna finds joy in reading and writing poetry, as well as traveling and discovering new perspectives through culture and conversation.

Brian Borgi DP Language and Literature/Head of Department: HS English

Brian Borgi is a graduate of Binghamton University, where he double-majored in English and History. He later earned his teaching license through the University of Colorado Boulder and his Masters of Education at Lehigh University. Having previously taught in the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, and Peru, Mr. Borgi enjoys life in Taiwan with his wife and daughter. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Borgi enjoys hiking, cycling, reading, visiting museums, playing board games, and watching Jeopardy!

Dr. Niocie Browne DP Mathematics/Head of Department: DP Mathematics

Dr. Niocie Browne is originally from Guyana, the only English-speaking country in South America. Her 22-year journey as an educator has taken her to various regions, including the American School in Guyana, Congo Brazzaville, and Burkina Faso. These diverse experiences have enriched her teaching approach, enabling her to connect with students from various cultural backgrounds and fostering a global perspective in her classroom.
Niocie holds both a Master’s (2013) and a Doctorate degree (2023) from Walden University. She is deeply motivated by witnessing her students’ academic and social growth. Every milestone they achieve inspires her to continue her exciting journey as an educator.
Outside the classroom, Niocie enjoys a mix of outdoor and indoor activities, traveling, and exploring new places with her daughter. She believes in the importance of holistic education and strives to create a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally.

Laura Buchan MS/HS Theatre

Laura is very excited to take on the theatre program at KAS! Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, she completed her theatre degree at the University of Victoria and proceeded to perform educational theatre in national parks all over western Canada. She went on to get her Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia, taught in Canadian public schools, and most recently has been teaching drama in Tunis, Tunisia.

With dual passions for both the arts and the outdoors, Laura likes to spend her free time cycling, hiking, and generally exploring the world in active ways. She first visited Taiwan in 2017, when she completed the “Formosa 900” - cycling the coast of the entire island! She is thrilled to be back in a new capacity. As a teacher, Laura is passionate about interdisciplinary learning, using theatre to build lifelong skills, and encouraging students to be creative risk-takers.

The most important thing in Laura’s life is a dog named Theo, and he is excited to move to Taiwan too, although he doesn’t really understand the concept.

Kimberly Butler Music

Kimberly is thrilled to be joining the KAS Middle-School community for the 2026-2027 school year. Originally from Waterloo, Ontario, she studied Music and English at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University before completing her Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University and her Master of Education at the University of Toronto.

She began her teaching career in Pickering, Ontario, working as a Grade 6 homeroom and Instrumental Music teacher. In 2002, Kimberly and her husband packed up for what they thought would be a short, two year adventure in Saudi Arabia. That “short adventure” turned into 23 years of living, learning, and teaching abroad, and she hasn’t stopped exploring since. During her time there, she taught Grade 8 Language Arts and Social Studies and served as the Grade 6–12 Instrumental Music Director.

For the past decade, Kimberly and her family have been living and working in Hong Kong, and they’re excited for their next chapter in Taiwan. Joining KAS with her husband, Dr. David Butler, she’ll also be accompanied by two of their three children: Bryant (13) and Lara (16), who will both be joining the KAS community. Their oldest daughter will continue her studies at the University of Waterloo.

When she’s not in the classroom, Kimberly enjoys going to the theatre, discovering great food spots, baking treats that have a habit of disappearing quickly, crafting (sometimes with glitter-related consequences), reading—especially anything by L. M. Montgomery—and planning future travels.

She is looking forward to meeting her students, building a warm and creative classroom community, and sharing a year full of learning, laughter, and memorable moments.

Angeling Chang HS Teaching Assistant

Ling joined the KAS faculty after teaching locally in Tainan for several years. She earned her BA in Spanish from the University of Missouri. Ling is TESOL certified to teach English, Chinese, and Spanish. She also holds a BA in Curriculum Development and Teaching from the University of Michigan. She has worldwide experience teaching various ages and language proficiency levels. Ling was a globetrotter from a young age, having grown up in Ecuador and the United States. In her spare time, Ling enjoys traveling and experiencing cultures around the world.

Stella Chen Athletics Director

Stella has a Bachelor of Social Work from Brigham Young University-HawaiI, United States. Stella is currently in the process of obtaining a master’s degree in physical education. She received her lifeguard and CPR/ First Aid certificate from the Chinese Taipei Water Life Saving Federation. Her hobbies include playing volleyball, traveling, cooking and spending time with family. She also enjoys coaching and teaching the varsity boys volleyball team at KAS.

Kai Wei Chiu Future Leaders Program Coordinator

Kai Wei previously worked as a Chinese language teacher, Student Activities Section Chief, and Student Council Advisor, which gave her the opportunity to work closely with students and provide them with ample support.
As the Future Leader Program Coordinator, Kai Wei combines her pedagogical knowledge with practical management and leadership skills. She is passionate about helping students succeed in exploring various industries and finding their passion for future studies and careers through the vibrant internship program!

Kyle Cripe MYP Health & Physical Education

Kyle Cripe is a K-12 certified Physical Educator. He has taught in Korea, and Bulgaria. Kyle was born and raised in West Papua, Indonesia. His parents work at an International school there. Kyle earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education K-12 from Palm Beach Atlantic University. He went to teach in Korea after graduating from University. He has taught Physical Education and health in the elementary, middle, and high school levels. His goal for Physical Education is to provide students a safe environment where they can engage in as many different types of sports and activities as possible in hopes of finding something they enjoy and will engage in for life. He values the development of teamwork, social interaction, and communication skills as these are things that can transfer to all areas of education and life. In his free time Kyle enjoys playing sports, hiking, and traveling.

MacKenzie Daniels MYP Mathematics/Head of Department: MYP Mathematics

MacKenzie Daniels is an experienced and dedicated Mathematics teacher with expertise in both the MYP and DP programs. Originally from Texas, USA, she has been teaching in Taiwan since 2018. Ms. Daniels holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Houston and a Master of Mathematics for Teachers from the University of Waterloo. She is a Google Level 2 Certified Educator and also holds an English as a Second Language Supplemental Certificate. In addition to teaching, she is actively involved in the school community, coaching cross country and basketball, and sponsoring the Math Club.

Dan Eichblatt DP Language & Literature

Dan is excited to be joining the faculty at KAS this year as a High School Language and Literature teacher. Born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand, his love of teaching began when he worked as a summer camp counselor in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania for five summers while completing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Auckland.

Dan has been teaching high school English since 2006, beginning his career at Takapuna Grammar School in Auckland. In 2018, while recovering from turning 40, he moved to Bahrain to begin his international teaching journey, where he had the opportunity to teach the IBDP at the Bahrain Bayan School.

Since July 2025, Dan has been traveling through Bulgaria, Costa Rica, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, Malta, and Vietnam (to name just a few), catching up with friends, discovering new food, and enjoying a well-earned sabbatical from the classroom. He now arrives refreshed and excited to join the Dragon community.

When not teaching, Dan can often be found in the dark of a cinema or under the unforgiving lights of a gym. He has completed several marathons - from the volcanic hills of Auckland to the driving rain of Queenstown and the dusty heat of the Bahrain desert - and is looking forward to running in Taiwan (albeit a little slower and with slightly more complaining). He also enjoys cooking, reading, hiking, theatre, music, and cats. He is looking forward to exploring life in Kaohsiung, discovering the local food scene, and getting to know the community both inside and outside the classroom.

Gulian Fang MYP and HS Chinese Language Acquisition

Gulian is excited to continue being a member of the KAS community in her new role as MYP and HS Chinese Language Acquisition teacher. She joined the KAS family as a 4th grade TA and has served as a TA leader.

Prior to KAS, Gulian had various experiences in teaching Mandarin. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and worked as the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant at Western Kentucky University. Gulian also has experience working as a Mandarin teacher in both the Critical Language Scholarship program and the Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program. Currently, she is pursuing her Masters degree in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language at National Kaohsiung Normal University and continuing her professional development through the IB program.

Gulian has a great enthusiasm for education, as demonstrated through her various roles in teaching English and Chinese as a Second Language through the years.

Sabrina Fernandes HS Learning Support Coordinator

Sabrina Fernandes is a lifelong learner, jet-setting educator, and unapologetic language nerd. With a suitcase full of degrees (PBDE for Second Language Acquisition and Inclusive Education from Université de Saint-Boniface, and B.Ed, B.A. from the University of Manitoba) and a flirtation with Paris, France at Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle (Advanced Language Certificate in tow), she made French Immersion her playground—from Nursery to Grade 12 and beyond.

Multilingual by design, Sabrina speaks four languages with curiosity as the tour guide, turning every classroom into a passport stamp and every conversation into a doorway to culture. A true educator for all seasons, Sabrina has slid seamlessly between roles: Teacher Librarian championing Inquiry-Based Learning and co-teaching, Inclusion Teacher modeling inclusive strategies, and Counselor soothing academic, career, trauma, and mental-health storms with a steady compass.

Her professional journey began in Manitoba in 1995, teaching French Immersion across rural and suburban schools and wearing many hats—classroom maestro, resourceFUL teammate, grade-level Team Leader, Department Head and Acting Principal. She’s danced with professional organizations (CTF, EFM, GUT, MATF, MTS, RETTA, SLTU,) and even volunteered summers with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation, delivering PD to international teachers in the Caribbean and Africa. If there’s a chair to polish or a curriculum to reimagine, she’s already there.

When she isn’t reshaping classrooms, Sabrina devours books, roams new skies (6 continents and 43 countries and counting), learns about new cultures and languages, and fosters animals (152 animals to date). She’s fueled by curiosity, servant leadership, and a conviction that understanding and diversity aren’t optional extras but the main course. Sabrina is looking forward to joining the Kaohsiung Dragons and learning more about Taiwan and what it has to offer.

Claudia Fidalgo DP & CAS Coordinator

Ms Claudia Fidalgo is originally from Santiago, Chile, where she worked at an international school 14 years. Before joining KAS, she taught in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 11 years. She is now a Spanish citizen and considers Barcelona her home. Ms Fidalgo has experienced the Diploma Programme as a Geography & TOK teacher, examiner, CAS coordinator, as well as a parent since both her daughters completed the program, she was the Diploma coordinator in Malaysia. Ms Fidalgo has a bachelor’s degree in History and Geography education, a master’s degree from the State University of New York (SUNY), and a certificate of international school leadership from the Principals’ Training Center. When not at work, Ms Fidalgo enjoys the outdoors, loves hiking, trekking, running, and most recently freediving. She enjoys discovering Taiwan’s trails and beaches. She lives with her 2 furry-kids, Pepper and Olive.

Chikako Fukuyo MYP/DP Japanese

Chikako graduated from Australian Catholic University with a Bachelor of Teaching degree. Chikako then became a certified Japanese Language Teacher by completing training from New Global Language Training Center in Tokyo. She teaches Middle and High School Japanese. Chikako has been trained in the MYP and in both IBDP Japanese B and Ab-Initio. Chikako has a husband and two children, and enjoys cooking and traveling with them.

Conor Gannon MYP/DP Physics/Head of Department: DP Science

Connor's background is in physics, with a focus on astrophysics and nuclear physics. He's taught physics in IB schools around the world. He also taught English for a year which helps him with aiming his lessons at the correct level for non-native speakers.
Things I’m most looking forward to about moving to Taiwan:

Susy Hernandez Comprehensive Counselor

Susy Hernandez will join the KAS Dragons this year as a Comprehensive Counselor. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Susan brings over a decade of experience in education and student support. She began her career teaching bilingual education in Spanish, including four years in 4th grade Spanish Bilingual and two years teaching Gifted and Talented 2nd grade Spanish Bilingual.

After completing her Master’s degree, Susy transitioned into school counseling at the High School for Law and Justice in Houston, where she has served students for the past eight years. In this role, she has supported students with academic planning, social emotional development, and college and career readiness.

Susy is excited to join an international school community and looks forward to supporting students as they plan their future pathways.
In her free time, Susy enjoys traveling, exploring new cultures, staying active, and spending time with her husband.

Dr. Cheng-Wei Hsieh HS/DP Music & Community Engagement Coordinator

Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the versatile musician Cheng-Wei Hsieh is passionate about teaching and coaching chamber music having previously served as a Teacher Assistant for the string area at the University of Houston Moores School of Music from 2016-19. During the assistantship, he taught violin private lessons, group technique class, and chamber music at undergraduate level. Hsieh taught as a string instructor at the Bob Hope School and Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan Middle School. He was in charge of group violin lessons, music theory classes, and music appreciation classes. Besides school teaching, Hsieh maintained a private studio in the Houston metropolitan area, working with students of all ages and levels. Hsieh has been invited to teach and perform as a violin faculty in the Encuentro Anual de Cuerdas, a pedagogical outreach program based in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Hsieh holds his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Houston Moores School of Music, Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, and Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan.

Eugenie Joseph HS Social & Emotional Learning Counselor

Eugenie is excited to be joining KAS as the High School SEL Counselor for the 2026-27 school year. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and is a proud Haitian-American. She later relocated to Connecticut, where she has been living and working in education for the past eight years. Eugenie has also lived in Canada and in several different states across the United States, experiences that have broadened her perspective and appreciation for different communities and cultures.

She earned her undergraduate degree in Communication from St. Francis College and later received her Master’s degree in School Counseling from Long Island University, Brooklyn. Her journey in education began as a substitute teacher before becoming a classroom teacher. After a short time working as a correction officer, she developed a deeper understanding of the challenges many young people face, which inspired her to pursue school counseling. As a school counselor, Eugenie focuses on supporting the whole student while building meaningful partnerships with families and school communities.

Outside of work, Eugenie enjoys traveling with her children. They love trying new foods, learning about different cultures, and baking together often. She will be relocating to Taiwan with her two children, her 4-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter, and they are excited to become part of the KAS community.

Gloria Kao MYP Chinese

Gloria Kao is a longtime teacher at KAS. Gloria holds a teaching degree from the ‘Department of Chinese Language and Culture for International Students’ at National Taiwan Normal University. Gloria has been trained in DP Literature, MYP Language & Literature, and CAS. Gloria previously served as the DP CAS Coordinator. Gloria has a strong passion for community outreach and community service and enjoys sharing this with students in her role as High School Community Service Coordinator. In addition, Gloria leads the KAS Community Service Club, Orphanage Club, Red Cross Club, Zonta clubs, Charity Art Club, Food Bank Donation, and Shou-Shan ES Teaching Club. Outside of school, Gloria enjoys listening to classical music and operas, as well as visiting museums.

Madison Kittleson DP Chemistry

Madison is excited to join the KAS dragon community. She grew up in Boulder, Colorado, USA where she spent her time playing volleyball and spending as much time as possible outdoors. She stayed in Boulder for college, attending the University of Colorado, where she earned her BA in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, along with her teacher's certification.

After student teaching, Madison moved to New York City to start her teaching career and spent six years there. While teaching in New York, she also attended the Teacher’s College at Columbia University to earn her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction. Her first teaching position was at a charter high school in the Bronx where she taught almost every science class offered at the school. Making the move to international schools, Madison first taught MYP and DP Biology and Chemistry in Mexico City for three years. During COVID she moved to Shenzhen where she taught MYP science for the last four years.

When not teaching, Madison loves to spend time in nature, hiking and camping. She also loves traveling, playing board games, and eating delicious food wherever she is.

Malcolm Lamprecht MYP/DP History

Malcolm Lamprecht joined KAS as a high school 11th and 12th-grade social studies teacher. He holds two degrees in history and anthropology from the University of Colorado Boulder. He holds an IB diploma program and training in history and business. Before coming to KAS, he was teaching in Tegucigalpa, Honduras as a DP history teacher. He enjoys a variety of games from video games to sports and loves relaxing by watching movies and salsa dancing.

David Lanza MYP Individuals & Societies

David Lanza will be joining KAS from Beirut, Lebanon where he spent 5 years as an IBDP History, Global Politics, and Theory of Knowledge teacher. Prior to this experience, he began his international teaching career at the American School of Tegucigalpa in Honduras where he spent 4 years.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, USA in a multicultural household, David has always been interested in traveling and learning about the world. As of writing this bio, David has traveled to 54 countries, many of which he’s visited multiple times to explore different regions within the countries. This thirst for cultural learning and experience directly translates to his teaching practice in how he challenges students to expand their worldview, which contributes to their development within the IB Learner Profile.

David holds a Masters of Arts in Secondary Social Studies Education as well as a Bachelor of Arts in History; both from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, USA. During these years as a student, David was fortunate to participate in long-term abroad experiences in Spain, Germany, and most importantly Taiwan in 2015 where he was privileged to spend two months as a volunteer English teacher in Nantou County; it was this experience that made him fall in love with Taiwan and the desire to return has been present ever since.

In his free time, he enjoys hiking, scuba diving, bicycling, planning travel adventures, and enjoying local food. He is looking forward to meeting everyone and becoming part of the KAS family.

Alex Lee MYP Biology & Physics

Alex is originally from Calgary, Canada. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology with a Japanese minor, he jumped ship and went to art school before pivoting again, earning his Bachelor of Education. His teaching journey started in Japan with the JET Programme, after which he worked as a secondary science and biology teacher in New Zealand and, most recently, Singapore.

Strong relationships form the basis of his teaching philosophy, and Alex loves utilizing practicals and performing demos to help students grasp abstract scientific concepts. A film nerd, he loves watching movies and then reading up about them immediately after on Wikipedia. Alex also loves playing games (both board and video), cycling, and learning new things. He lives in Taiwan with his wife Ivy, who is a speech-language therapist. Conversant in Cantonese and Japanese, Alex is learning Mandarin so he can start participating in family conversations with his Taiwanese in-laws beyond using random broken vocabulary.

Irene Lee MYP/DP Chinese

Irene Lee joined KAS as a high school Chinese teacher. She holds an M.Ed degree from National Kaohsiung Normal University. She has been trained in DP Literature, Language & Literature, and MYP Language & Literature courses. She has a strong passion for all classical and contemporary literature, and also enjoys sharing this with students in her role. Before coming to KAS, she taught as a DP/MYP teacher for many years. She has two lovely children; an older girl and a younger boy. She loves to travel, reading, watch movies, and be with her family.

Maria Lopez MYP/DP Spanish

Originally from Spain, Maria began her international journey during her university years, spending several summers in France and the United Kingdom working as an au pair, experiences that sparked a lasting passion for intercultural understanding. Although she initially studied Journalism and began her professional career in the media sector, her strong interest in languages and cultures led her to pursue a degree in Translation and Interpreting and, ultimately, a career in language education.

In 2013, Maria moved with her family to the United States, where she taught Spanish and French for five years in a diverse and multicultural environment. Eager to further expand her international teaching experience, she joined an international school in Mumbai, India, in 2018. By June 2026, she will have completed eight years there, teaching Spanish and French in both the MYP and DP programmes.

Grateful for her life and school community in Mumbai, Maria is excited to begin a new chapter as she joins the KAS family this year.
Outside the classroom, she enjoys reading and writing, staying active through fitness and running, playing table tennis, hiking, dancing, meeting new people, and exploring local cuisines. She especially looks forward to discovering Taiwan’s rich culinary culture.

Danielle Meehan MYP Chemistry & Forensic Science/Head of Department: MYP Science

The experience Ms Meehan brings to KAS comes from a foundation built over her years as a chemist and biologist in clinical and industrial laboratories, such as Eastman Kodak Company and the University of Rochester Medical Center. During her tenure with URMC, she was the lead technician at the hospital’s HLA lab, which is an essential component of the human organ transplant program. Ms. Meehan earned both her BS in Chemistry and in Biology at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. She has two children and two cats. She enjoys cross-stitch, talking about cinema, sci/fi-fantasy novels, and podcasts. She has been known to drive into work with the Director of Learning Technology, to whom she is married.

Dr. Colin Mitchell MYP Individuals & Societies

Colin joins the KAS Dragons this year as an Individual and Societies Grade 6 teacher. He has taught in international schools in Europe, Africa, and now Asia. His PhD is specialized in Epidemiology and complemented by an MBA in Marketing. He has taught MS, HS, and University courses and worked with several curricula and frameworks, including DP, MYP, IGCSE, and IMYC.

Prior to teaching, Colin worked in the medical device industry and continues to help organizations with strategic planning. This experience has shaped his teaching philosophy in helping students make connections between the content and real-world applications. Outside the classroom, Colin enjoys reading and traveling with his wife, Jenny, and two children.

Clint Munkholm MYP Math

Clint hails originally from Alberta, Canada. While he graduated with a B.Sc. in Ecology, his career has included a broad array of experience, including Environmental Education, Ecological Design, Electrical Engineering, and the design of green buildings. He has teaching experience in both public and private schools, community colleges, and via his own hands-on maker workshop, working with children to develop the skills needed to design and build their own creations. He is passionate about helping students practically apply their learning.
Clint, a “Tainan son-in-law”, is a longtime member of the KAS family, with two sons who are KAS alumni, and his daughter a student. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking, fermenting, rooftop gardening, community composting, and aquaponics.

Dwayne Okpaise Co-Director of College Counseling

Prior to joining KAS, Dwayne spent 9 years in college admissions, including time at Pitzer College, ArtCenter College of Design (ACCD) and St. John’s College. He has been involved with international admissions recruitment for 5 years, working primarily with students from East Asia. Dwayne graduated from Reed College in Portland, Oregon with a degree in art history. Outside of work, he enjoys printmaking and exploring foods from around the world. Dwayne lives in Taiwan with his husband, Brice.

Justin Pilon MYP & DP Computer Science/Head of Department: STEAM Team

Justin Pilon received a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a Master’s of Education from George Mason University. Mr. Pilon is MYP experienced and qualified. He teaches Elementary Technology, High School Digital Media, and High School Computer Science. He has been responsible for the production of the school yearbook as well as the school media report for many years. He has a strong interest in programming and was employed as a software engineer prior to becoming a teacher. Justin is an Apple certified teacher as well as a member of the Tech Ambassadors program at KAS. He is fluent in English and French, and can also speak conversational Mandarin.

Melanie Sanchez MYP/DP Language & Literature

Melanie is an experienced English Language and Literature teacher with a passion for her subject and a deep appreciation for diversity and inclusivity, gained through her extensive international experience across four continents. She believes that language and critical thinking are fundamental in shaping both individuals and the world, and she fosters a safe and inclusive environment in her classroom where students feel comfortable sharing and exploring diverse perspectives.

Melanie holds a Master of Education from Seattle University, complementing her Degree in German, and speaks fluent German with an Austrian dialect. She believes that effective communication is built on understanding, empathy, and trust.

Melanie has relocated to Kaohsiung with her husband, Martin Machata, and is excited to join the KAS community. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, outdoor activities, and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Hanna Shin DP Biology

Hanna was born in South Korea and most of her schooling from grades 1–12 was in Britain. She graduated with a Bachelor’s in Life Science and Marketing Management in Korea, then went to Texas to complete her teacher certification course. Ms Shin worked at a public school near Dallas, TX before teaching at an international school in Korea.

Natalie Souchon MYP/DP Art

Natalie returned to Kaohsiung after several years of teaching in Taiwan, China, South Africa and Japan. She hails from South Africa and is a certified Middle and High School Art teacher with a passion for IB Visual Arts education. She also has a strong background in ESL teaching to school students of all ages. Natalie has worked at KAS in the Elementary and Middle Art Department, and in the DP and MYP Art Department. Natalie holds a BA (Honours) in Fine Arts from the University of South Africa, a PGCE from the University of Witwatersrand, and an MA in History from the Open University, UK with a research focus on Japanese art. Natalie is a member of the Botanical Art Association of South Africa. She also has a keen interest in the study and preservation of Thangka painting through her association with Tsering Art School in Kathmandu, Nepal. She enjoys painting and gardening in her free time.

Emma Su Director of Partnerships & Internships

As a Taiwanese who resided in California for almost two decades, Emma was extremely happy to return to her hometown to be part of the KAS community in 2024 as the Director of Partnerships & Internships. Emma has 17 years of experience working as a law office manager and a paralegal. She’s passionate about making connections in the community and beyond, and dedicating her knowledge and skills to help students achieve their goals.
Outside of work, Emma enjoys spending time with her daughter, gym, outdoor activities, reading, and music.

Jackie Su Co-Director of College Counseling

Jackie Su has worked in higher education for ten years in Maine, Connecticut, and Singapore in a variety of roles, with the last seven years in college admissions. With experience in both international and American higher education and admissions, she is passionate about college access and advising students as they plan their next steps. Jackie obtained her Master’s in Higher Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine.
Jackie was born and raised in New York and has family here in Taiwan, where her parents emigrated from. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, exploring the outdoors, and traveling.

Marcelo Ventrice MYP/DP Spanish

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Marcelo is an international educator with over 15 years of experience within the International Baccalaureate. He holds a Master’s degree in Modern Languages and Literature and began his career teaching Spanish A in Argentina before continuing his professional journey in Paris, and later Barcelona, as well as teaching remotely in Chile and Switzerland. He is also an official IB Spanish A Examiner with more than a decade of experience.

In addition to Spanish A, Marcelo teaches IB Film and has a strong interest in visual storytelling and narrative. Alongside his school work, he supports IB teachers and students through tailored programs, workshops, and mentoring as part of his independent educational project.

Beyond the classroom, Marcelo is a certified yoga teacher, having trained in India, Spain, and Thailand. He brings this reflective and somatic perspective into his teaching philosophy, valuing presence, balance, and thoughtful engagement with learning, and often incorporates mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation practices to support students—especially during high-pressure IB periods.

In his free time, Marcelo enjoys traveling, walking, reading, watching films, and exploring the intersections between movement and art.

Aurora Zani HS English Language Acquisition

Born and raised in Marshfield, Massachusetts, Aurora spent most of her time in New England, USA, before finally making her first trip to China in 2014. During that visit, Aurora realized her passion for language learning and returned to the US to pursue a degree and certification in EAL secondary education. After obtaining her Master’s in TESOL, Aurora moved overseas and has worked in China, Taiwan, and South Korea as an EAL teacher for a variety of ages while also being an active member on her school DEIJB team.

In her free time, she enjoys playing video games, working out, learning languages, and performing in theatre.

Aurora is greatly looking forward to meeting her new family at KAS and to making many wonderful memories in Kaohsiung.

Sarah Ducharme Librarian

Sarah taught middle school English for 15 years before stepping into the best job ever: School Librarian of 15 years! Originally from the Boston area, she and her husband took the leap into international waters in 1998, moving to ACS-Beirut along the Mediterranean. Since then, it’s been five other countries, two children (now adults), and one adventure after another.
Sarah has masters degrees in Education & Library Science and is passionate about all things library and literacy. She looks forward to working with students, teachers, and parents in building a culture of reading and research.

Her two 20-something daughters live in Boston and NYC and are doing a fine job of adulting thus far, knock on wood! Christmas and summers are all about them and visits with extended family and their various dogs and cats (Tally, Fig, Goose, and Mister!)
Although the library is her happy place, she also enjoys long walks & low-key hikes, reading (very on-brand), cooking, scouring restaurant reviews, and allll the coffee shops (pic at Andy’s Diner in Cambridge, MA)

Stella Chen Athletics Director

Stella has a Bachelor of Social Work from Brigham Young University-HawaiI, United States. Stella is currently in the process of obtaining a master’s degree in physical education. She received her lifeguard and CPR/ First Aid certificate from the Chinese Taipei Water Life Saving Federation. Her hobbies include playing volleyball, traveling, cooking and spending time with family. She also enjoys coaching and teaching the varsity boys volleyball team at KAS.

Angela Hsu Aquatics Director

Angela Hsu joined KAS as an Aquatic assistant/lifeguard and is now the Aquatics Director after years of experience in the department. She earned her BA from Kaohsiung Medical University in Sports Medicine and her MA from National Kaohsiung Normal University in Physical Education. She continued to obtain her teaching certificate in the States of Hawaii. Angela is a certified lifeguard and Lifesaving Coach, fitness coach, volleyball referee and coach, and has her EMT license. Angela has experience as an athletic trainer for local, national, and international events, including the National Games in Taiwan and ACAMIS in Hong Kong and China. She also leads the girls’ varsity volleyball team and has taken them to the championship several times. She and her sister live together in Kaohsiung; they enjoy traveling, cooking, swimming, and watching movies.

Amber Lin Kindergarten Teaching Assistant

Amber Lin graduated from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. She started at KAS as a Grade 3 teaching assistant, before becoming a teaching assistant in Kindergarten. Amber has previous experience working as an athletic complex assistant. Amber loves cooking, baking, and spending time with her family.

Hannah McIntosh Director of Student Support Services

Originally from the southern United States, Hannah completed her BS in Psychology and MA in Counseling before moving to Taiwan.

In her previous role as School Counselor in Taipei, she implemented and coordinated the Learning Support program for exceptional students. She has many years experience working with children, including former positions as Refugee Program Specialist and Tutor for students with intensive academic, social/emotional, and language needs. Throughout her career, she has worked with students with the most intensive behavioral and academic challenges. She is licensed as an Associate Professional Counselor, School Counselor, and Special Education teacher, all in the United States. Her classroom teaching experience includes AP Psychology, Introductory Psychology, and Life Skills. She is passionate about advocacy, inclusivity, and creating spaces that support all students in accessible education.

A fitness enthusiast, she spends her free time doing CrossFit with her Taiwanese husband. Additionally, she enjoys cooking, traveling, cultural experiences, as well as professional and academic pursuits.

Daisy Chang Executive Administrative Assistant

Daisy joined KAS in 1999. She has been in charge of office operations, acted as cashier and purchaser, and has worn many hats as needed over her many years at KAS. Before joining KAS, Daisy was the secretary of AmCham Kaohsiung which at the time was affiliated with KAS, hence the opportunity to move to our school. Prior to that, she worked five years for the Jupiter International Company, a subsidiary enterprise of Japan Airlines, after she had graduated from university. Daisy majored in English at the Providence University in Taichung and then graduated from TamKang University in Taipei. She finished her training and got her secretary certification from the Chinese Personal Executive Association. Daisy began as a teacher assistant in Grade 1 at KAS and soon became the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. She is married and has one daughter.

Rebecca Chao Accountant

Rebecca Chao helps to keep KAS’s business affairs in order as an Accountant.

Rachel Chen HS Secretary/Registrar

Rachel Chen has her BA in Management Science from Gonzaga University, Spokane, in the United State. Rachel is the school registrar and admin assistant to High School and Counseling. She has trained at the PowerSchool University in San Diego and at summer institutes in New York and Washington, D.C. . She is happily married with two children and enjoys reading, movies, yoga and farming at her leisure time.

Ellen Chiang Receptionist

Ellen Chiang graduated from Shih Chien University, majoring in Fashion Design & Merchandising. She also finished her training and got her secretary certification from the Chinese Personal Executive Association. Before coming to KAS, she was an administrative assistant and teacher assistant in an after-hours language school. Ellen enjoys greeting our many visitors at the front desk. When not working, Ellen enjoys designing and creating clothing and accessories.

Kai Wei Chiu Future Leaders Program Coordinator

Kai Wei previously worked as a Chinese language teacher, Student Activities Section Chief, and Student Council Advisor, which gave her the opportunity to work closely with students and provide them with ample support.
As the Future Leader Program Coordinator, Kai Wei combines her pedagogical knowledge with practical management and leadership skills. She is passionate about helping students succeed in exploring various industries and finding their passion for future studies and careers through the vibrant internship program!

Robert Chuang Senior Technology Specialist

Robert Chuang graduated from National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, where he earned his BS in Information Management, and his MS in Information Management. He is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) and a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). He is the Senior Technology Specialist in the office of Learning Technology at KAS where he supports all IT and learning technology needs. Robert also provides audio and video technical support for the school. Before joining KAS, Robert gained IT and management experience working for over 17 years at various semiconductors, telecom, networking, and system integration companies. He has one daughter. He enjoys traveling, movies, music, learning, and being with his family.

Wini Henson Human Resources Manager

Born and raised in Taipei, Wini has spent time living and working in Taiwan, China and the US. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from Indiana University at Bloomington. She has worked in corporate operations and also spent time teaching English in Taiwan.
After COVID travel restrictions were finally lifted, Wini embarked on an extended backpacking journey around the world. After spending the most incredible 18 months traveling to far flung corners of the world, Wini returned to Kaohsiung ready for a new adventure.
In her free time, Wini loves to play Ultimate Frisbee, hike, travel and cook.

Jeannie Huang Accountant

Jeannie Huang earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences. Before joining KAS, Jeannie worked at the Tax and Consulting Department in KPMG, one of the top CPA firms in Taiwan. Ms. Huang earned her license as a Bookkeeper. When she isn’t working, Jeannie enjoys spending time with her family and cooking.

Nancy Huang Middle School Secretary

Nancy Huang is the middle school secretary and works at the KAS reception desk. Before she transitioned to the main office, she worked as a library assistant, then as prekindergarten and Grade 5 assistant. Nancy graduated from Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages where she majored in English. Nancy enjoys working with students and parents, helping answer their questions, translating, chaperoning trips, or supporting our teachers. In her free time, Nancy enjoys eating out with friends and family.

Vivien Huang Athletics/IB MYP/DP Assistant

Vivien Huang has been a KAS office staff member and wears many hats. She graduated from WenZao Language College with a major in German. She worked as Grade 5 teacher assistant, then became the administrative assistant to the IB Coordinator and the Athletic Director. She finished her training and got her secretarial certification from the Chinese Personal Executive Association. Vivien loves knitting, and cooking and enjoys time with her family and friends.

Jeff Ko Facilities Officer

Jeff Ko earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Chia-Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, Department of Occupational Safety. Now he is in charge of the facilities, equipment, and maintenance of the KAS Sports Complex. Jeff enjoys working at KAS very much. It’s very clear to him that, in addition to providing students a comfortable and safe learning environment, it’s also important to make sure all the school equipment functions well to ensure an optimal setting for the children. Outside of work hours, Jeff enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Li comes to KAS from a diverse background including military service, construction, and marketing at one of Taiwan’s best known cafe chains, Donutes. Though children tend to be much more active than cakes and croissants, Li enjoys the opportunity to capture the joy of childhood through the lens of his camera and promote the school.

Tracy Lee Purchasing Agent

Tracy Lee joined KAS as a library assistant and later moved to the business office as a purchasing agent. Tracy earned her MA in Education: Option in Computer Education and Technology Leadership from California State University, Los Angeles, United States. Before coming to KAS, Tracy was a senior secretary at an immigration consulting company. She enjoys traveling with family and friends.

Mack Lin Cashier/Payroll Clerk

Mack spent 16 years in New Zealand, where he earned his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Accounting and Information Systems from the University of Canterbury. He went on to qualify as a Chartered Accountant with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), building his career as a professional accountant with a strong focus on treasury and management accounting.

When the workday ends, Mack trades spreadsheets for running shoes. You will usually find him on the track or out on the open road—training for his next half-marathon, chasing a personal best in his favourite 10K, or simply outrunning mischief!

Shu-Ping Liu Nurse

Shu-Ping, the school nurse, graduated from Fooyin Junior College with a degree in nursing. She is a registered nurse in Taiwan and California. Prior to her position at KAS, she had eleven years experience working in different hospital departments including the ICU and NICU in Taipei and at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital. She loves to interact with the students, staff, and faculty and is always available to anyone who needs assistance. After work, she enjoys cooking, music, and relaxing in her cozy home.

Emma Su Director of Partnerships & Internships

As a Taiwanese who resided in California for almost two decades, Emma was extremely happy to return to her hometown to be part of the KAS community in 2024 as the Director of Partnerships & Internships. Emma has 17 years of experience working as a law office manager and a paralegal. She’s passionate about making connections in the community and beyond, and dedicating her knowledge and skills to help students achieve their goals.
Outside of work, Emma enjoys spending time with her daughter, gym, outdoor activities, reading, and music.

Nana Su Cashier

Nana Su graduated from Shih Chien University with her degree in accounting. Before joining KAS, Nana was a Cashier at Qing-Feng Aquatic Products Co., Ltd. and has experience working at the Telecom Technology Center. She is married and has one daughter.

Christine Sung Receptionist

Christine is one of the first smiles you see when you enter KAS. She cheerfully answers the phones and helps visitors at our reception desk.

Lena Wang Systems Analyst

Lena Wang earned her BA in Information Management from National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung. She holds certifications as a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist: SQL Server, Implementation, and Maintenance. She is also a Google Certified Trainer and Google Certified Administrator. Lena worked as a research and development engineer helping to design and develop Rich Internet Applications (RIA) for Business Intelligence (BI) systems at Foxconn in Shenzhen. At KAS, Lena is the Systems Analyst in the office of Learning Technology. She instructs and supports teachers and students in the use of various learning tools on campus, and designs the system processes for office operational procedures and business workflows. Lena enjoys traveling, running, and hiking, and has completed several half-marathons. She has also climbed several Asian summits above 3000 meters.

Denise Wu ES Secretary/Attendance Officer

Denise graduated from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, majoring in English. Later she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, majoring in Tourism Management. Denise finished her secretary’s training and received her certification from the Chinese Personal Executive Association. Ms. Wu began at KAS as a teacher assistant, before joining the office staff.
