The ability to communicate in more than one language is essential to expanding an awareness of the world- and fostering respect for cultural diversity. MYP Spanish Phase 1 serves as a meaningful foundation for language development and intercultural understanding. This course teaches all modes of communication- but emphasizes the use of spoken language in practical- everyday settings. Accurate pronunciation and basic vocabulary are stressed through listening- and speaking activities. Language and culture are studied through authentic text- video- music- geography- and discussion of customs.

Spanish Phase 2 Middle School

Spanish Phase 2
Grade: 8

In MYP Spanish 2 (Phase 2), students increase their language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Students focus on their speed, accuracy, and proper expression through a variety of themes, analyzing conventions and connections in a wide variety of simple authentic texts. Each unit consists of a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking and writing activities, multimedia cultural presentations, and interactive activities and practices which reinforce vocabulary and grammar. Students should expect to be actively engaged in their own language learning, use a wide range of vocabulary and grammatical structures generally accurately, start participating in short conversations and respond appropriately to basic conversational prompts, as well as analyze and compare cultural practices, products, and perspectives from various Spanish-speaking countries.

Japanese Phase 1 Middle School

Japanese Phase 1

Japanese Phase 1 is a full year course designed to give students an opportunity to start acquiring the basic skills needed to be successful and effective language learners in the future. Students are to explore the language learning process through various skills such as listening, reading, writing, and speaking and cultural competence. Our goal is COMMUNICATION in a range of contexts and for a variety of purposes in the Japanese language, and having CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDINGS throughout the course. Students will explore Japanese culture, make comparisons with our own, connections with other subjects as well as acquiring language itself, and try to use Japanese in a variety of situations.

Japanese Phase 1 is also to provide students with the MYP Language Acquisition (Japanese language) programme. Therefore, the aims and objectives of the course reflects that of MYP Language Acquisition course.

Japanese Phase 2 Middle School

Japanese Phase 2
Grade: 8

Japanese Phase 2 is a full-year middle school course designed to provide students with the opportunity to further develop the fundamental skills necessary to become successful and proficient language learners in the future. The course aims to foster exploration of the language learning process through various skills, including listening, reading, writing, speaking and cultural competence. Primary objective is to facilitate effective communication in a range of contexts and for various purposes using the Japanese language.

Spanish Phase 1 High School

Grade: 10
Prerequisite: None

This year-long course is designed to build basic skills in the target language: listening, reading, writing and speaking. There is a focus on acquiring communicative competence in the target language, developing cultural awareness, familiarity with sounds and rhythms of target language, developing vocabulary, understanding basic grammar patterns, and developing oral communication for most daily situations. Grading and assessment will be made through a variety of ways to meet the student’s learning styles. These include, but are not limited to: quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, homework, pair work, group work, role-playing, language games, cultural activities, blogging, debates, interviews, reports and internet activities.

Spanish Phase 3 High School

Grade 9
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish Phase 2 in Middle School

This year-long course is designed to reinforce skills learned in the target language in World Languages Levels I and II: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The goal is to teach students to communicate with acceptable fluency in the target language in a vast array of written and oral situations and, at the same time, boost cultural knowledge, increase vocabulary and familiarity with the sounds and rhythms of target language, encourage the use of more complex grammatical patterns and idioms, write academic papers and develop oral communication for daily and non-daily situations in order to prepare students for the IB Language B course.

Grading and assessment will be made through a variety of ways to meet the student’s learning styles. These include, but are not limited to: quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, homework, pair work, group work, role playing, language games, cultural activities, blogging, debates, interviews, reports and internet activities. Students will also be introduced to Language B type activities and assessed using IB rubrics and criteria. This course also includes oral exams.

Spanish Phase 4 High School

Grade 10
Prerequisite: successful completion of Spanish Phase 3

This course is the final year of preparation for students’ success in IB Spanish B SL. Students will strengthen both their receptive and production skills in the language and will be assessed in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

IB Spanish B SL High School

Grades: 11 and 12 (this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish Phase 4

This two-year advanced course is designed to reinforce skills learned in the target language in World Languages Phases 1 through 4: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The goal is to teach students to communicate with near fluency in the target language in most written and oral situations and, at the same time, boost cultural knowledge, increase vocabulary and familiarity with the sounds and rhythms of target language, encourage the use of more complex grammatical patterns, develop written skills in order to write academic papers and develop oral communication for daily and non-daily situations. This two-year course will culminate in the IB Language B Standard Level test. Grading and assessment will be made through a variety of ways to meet the student’s learning styles. These include, but are not limited to: quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, homework, pair work, group work, role-playing, language games, cultural activities, blogging, debates, interviews, reports and internet activities. Students will also be trained in IB type activities and assessed using IB rubrics and criteria. This course requires students to take the IB internal oral assessment.

IB Spanish Ab Initio High School

Grade: 11 and 12 (this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite: Spanish Phase 1

This two-year course is designed for students with beginner-level Spanish, in order to take the IB Ab Initio examination in their senior year. This course will reinforce skills learned in the target language in World Language Phase 1: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. There is a focus on the continued development and extension of vocabulary, understanding complex grammar patterns, and developing oral skills. There will be an oral internal assessment following the IB criteria and assessed externally. Language Ab Initio will focus on writing, grammar patterns and preparing students for the IB Ab Initio level test. Grading and assessment will be made through a variety of ways to meet the student’s learning styles. These include, but are not limited to: quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, homework, pair work, group work, role-playing, language games, cultural activities, blogging, debates, interviews, reports and internet activities.

Japanese 3 High School

Grade: 9
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Japanese Phase 2 in Middle School

This year-long course continues to build language skills in the target language: listening, reading, writing and speaking. There is a focus on acquiring communicative competence in the target language, developing cultural awareness, expressions commonly used in the target language culture, expanding vocabulary, grammar patterns, and acquiring communication skills in both receptive and productive skills for daily situations and some specific situations. Grading and assessments is designed along with MYP Language Acquisition Curriculum, Phase 3. Learning activities include, but are not limited to: quizzes, tests, projects, presentations, homework, pair work, group work, role-playing, language games, cultural activities, blogging, debates, interviews, reports and internet activities.

Japanese Phase 4 High School

Grade: 10
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Japanese Phase 3

This course is the final year of preparation for students’ success in IBDP Japanese B SL. Students will strengthen both their receptive and production skills in the language and will be assessed in reading, writing, listening and speaking along with MYP Language Acquisition Curriculum Phase 4.

IB Japanese B SL High School

Grades: 11 and 12 (this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Japanese Phase 4

This two-year advanced course is designed to reinforce skills learned in the target language in previous years in the MYP Language Acquisition programme. The goal is to lead students to communicate with near fluency in the target language in most written and oral situations and, at the same time, boost cultural knowledge, increase vocabulary and familiarity with the sounds and rhythms of the target language, encourage the use of more complex grammatical patterns, develop written skills in order to write academic papers and develop oral communication for daily and non-daily situations. This course will culminate in the IB Language B Standard Level test. Grading and assessment will be made in IB type activities and assessed using IB rubrics and criteria. Assessments are designed mostly in the IB style along with IB rubrics in order to support student preparation for the IBDP exam.
