Design, and the resultant development of new technologies, has given rise to profound changes in society, transforming how we access and process information, adapt our environment, communicate with others, solve problems, work and live. MYP design challenges students to apply practical and creative-thinking skills to solve design problems; encourages students to explore the role of design in historical and contemporary contexts; and raises students’ awareness of their responsibilities when making design decisions and taking action. Inquiry and problem-solving are at the heart of design. MYP design requires the use of the design cycle as a tool, which provides: the methodology to structure the inquiry and analyze problems; the development of feasible solutions; the creation of solutions; and the testing and evaluation of the solution. In MYP design, a solution can be a model, prototype, product or system independently created and developed by students. MYP design enables students to develop not only practical skills but also strategies for creative and critical thinking.

In this introductory course students will learn coding through web-development. They will learn to design and code web-pages using HMTL 5, CSS, and Javascript. Students will come to understand how websites are made, how they are displayed, and how to upload their own websites onto the Internet. Students will develop web-based apps using their logic and critical thinking. They will develop web-based games using HTML 5 and javascript that will involve input and output from users and will require coding using javascript fundamentals such as conditionals, loops, and functions. By the end of the course they will come away with a foundational knowledge of coding and they will be ready for further pursuits of computer programming such as the Python, Java, or C++ languages.

An introductory course which examines concepts related to computer science. Students will learn about computer programming using the Python programming language, object-oriented design, and the development of simple applications. Work will often be project based and students will work together to develop different kinds of apps that can accomplish a wide variety of tasks. Students will also learn about computer/technology related subjects such as ethical use of data, data security, encryption/decryption, privacy, hacking, networks, artificial intelligence, and other subjects that are relevant in the modern world. No prerequisites are required for this class and it is meant as an introduction for students interested in computers and technology who may wish to pursue further studies in this area.
Grades: 11 and 12 ( this is a two-year course)
Prerequisite: Algebra II or Precalculus
The IB DP computer science SL/HL course requires an understanding of the fundamental concepts of computational thinking as well as knowledge of how computers and other digital devices operate. The course, underpinned by conceptual thinking, draws on a wide spectrum of knowledge, and enables and empowers innovation, exploration and the acquisition of further knowledge. Students study how computer science interacts with and influences cultures, society and how individuals and societies behave, and the ethical issues involved. During the course the student will develop computational solutions.
