Learning Beyond the Classroom

Oregon State Lawmakers and Taiwan Connection Visit KAS

At KAS, we believe that education is more than just textbooks and classrooms. It’s about stepping out into the world, embracing new experiences, and learning by doing. Whether our students are interning with the Kaohsiung Aquas, volunteering in Taimali, traveling to The Hague for the International MUN Conference, or competing in Seoul at the AISA volleyball tournament, they are encouraged to apply their knowledge, lead by example, and follow their passions. These experiences, made possible by strong community partnerships, help shape our students into well-rounded individuals who excel both in and out of the classroom.

This week was a perfect example of how these partnerships bring exciting opportunities to campus. We were thrilled to host two events that reflect our commitment to holistic learning: a visit from Oregon State legislators and an inspiring workshop by the Taiwan Connection orchestra.

U.S. Government and Policy: An Inside Look with Oregon Legislators

Students had the rare opportunity to engage directly with State Representative Paul Evans and former State Representative Brian Clem from Oregon this week. Their visit provided a firsthand look at the workings of the U.S. political system and the importance of civic engagement. The legislators shared their experiences in public service and engaged in a lively Q&A session with students from Mr. Lamprecht’s 10th grade History class that included discussions on the inner workings of government, the importance of Democracy, and the impact of policy on everyday life.

Representative Clem expressed his admiration for the students’ enthusiasm following the session, remarking, “It’s clear that KAS is preparing its students to be thoughtful and engaged citizens.” Representative Evans even added, “Their questions were tougher than many I get on the campaign trail.”

Music Education: A Harmonious Experience with Taiwan Connection

In another exciting event, we welcomed the world-renowned Taiwan Connection orchestra to KAS. Led by the acclaimed Maestro Hu, Taiwan Connection is dedicated to promoting music education throughout Taiwan. Their workshop and concert,  organized by our own Dr. Hsieh, offered students a chance to hear from professional musicians, and to explore the significance of music and it’s role in developing our creativity, emotional intelligence, and appreciation for diverse cultures.

One of the highlights was a performance by a string quartet featuring Maestro Hu, who captivated the audience with Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden.” The rendition brought the emotion and intensity of the music to life.

Community partnerships play a crucial role in expanding the scope of education, providing students with opportunities to connect with the real world in meaningful ways. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also prepare students to be thoughtful, informed, and engaged members of society.

The events of this week are a testament to the power of collaboration between schools and the wider community, showing how such connections can inspire hollistic learning and elevate the educational experience.
