Oh, to be part of a team! To make varsity and to play for your school, wearing the shiny uniforms that shows off the dragon emblem. Even if you don’t make varsity, but you play your heart out anyway because there’s nothing more exciting than running up and down a field or a court with a ball in your control for a few seconds before you pass it on to your team mate or it unfortunately gets taken away from you by the opposing team.
But why are sports so good for you? There’s actually several reasons why…
Playing Sports Boosts Your Brain Power/Ability to Focus
There are actually numerous studies that show that playing sports can really improve your ability to focus and also your brain power. There are lots of studies online proving this! You’ll be able to focus better and your brain’s performance will increase, which is a win for your grades too!
Playing Sports Boosts Your Immunity System
By exercising, we are pumping blood and doing all kinds of great things to our body. Exercising is actually the best thing you can do to improve your immune system overall, and keep illness at bay! There are again, lots and lots of studies to back that up. Besides, exercise creates endorphins, a natural hormone that makes you feel happy! We all need a little bit of happy!
You Learn Crucial Social Skills
Learning to be part of a team can sometimes be the toughest lesson to learn when you’re trying to win games and matches. It can be frustrating learning to let go of control of the ball- sometimes a teammate is just in a better position to score a point than you are. Sometimes, you have to take the fall so that a teammate can go for the win. Other times, you lose. Learning to deal with the emotions running high, the let downs of your team or by your team, and of course, your own physical limitations (we can’t all dunk at age 16), we learn valuable lessons about working in a team and how to work with other people.
You Make Friends and Have Fun!
To end on a fun note: playing sports means making great friends! Making friends on your sports team makes the “I’ve got your back” true in more than one term! There’s a reason that all those cheesy high school movies have all the ‘jocks’ hanging out together and doing silly things together: spending that much time together, going through all those emotions together of winning and losing, that is bound to create a lasting bond!
So, if you’re up for making new friends, learning social skills as well as boost your mental and physical abilities, join a sports team! See what amazing things will come of it—it might not be a trophy but it’ll definitely make a lifelong impact!
