KAS Returns In-Person for G1-G12
Happy Year of the Tiger! I hope that all our KAS families, faculty, and staff have enjoyed time with family and friends.
I’m writing to confirm that we will open our campus for in-person learning only for grades 1–12 on Monday, February 7. On Saturday the Mayor announced that private and public PK and K programs cannot open for in-person learning until February 14. This is to limit community transmission of the omicron variant in Kaohsiung City.
Therefore, we will have a ‘soft start’ for online learning for our PreK and Kindergarten classes on Monday, February 7. On that day, offline activities and other information will be sent to parents by our early childhood and specialist teachers as early as possible. On Tuesday, a regular schedule of online synchronous and offline asynchronous activities will begin for PreK and Kindergarten learners. Our community handbook for “virtualKAS” is being translated now and will be available in Mandarin soon. In that handbook, we have detailed information about our online program, and our expectations for teachers, students, and families when we’re learning online.
Next week, only required parent meetings will be allowed on campus, following the rules for entering that we already have in place. Activities and sports are canceled after school for the first week of February, and we’ll make a decision soon about the coming weeks. Masks are required when lecturing in the classroom and in PE lessons, for the time being. The partitions will remain up in our dining halls.
Parents, if your child is unwell or has any symptoms of COVID-19, please keep them home. You can also use a rapid test at home for screening if someone has symptoms. If a student becomes symptomatic during the day we will isolate the student and send them home as quickly as possible. Please remember that an infected person may show just one, some, or even none of these symptoms:
- Fever or chills
- Dry / wet cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
- Muscle or body/joint pain
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
We will continue to monitor the health and safety situation and if anything changes to ease or to tighten restrictions in the city, we will inform everyone as quickly as we can.
Our PTA Meeting will be held on Zoom at 2 PM on Tuesday, February 8 at this Zoom room and I hope that many KAS parents can join us.
The Ministry of Education has issued no further guidance before the Lunar New Year, so we are continuing in-person learning on campus. All after-school activities have been postponed, so students are expected to leave campus at the end of the school day.
On Wednesday 26 January, there will be an early dismissal for our teachers to work together, and all KAS students should leave the campus at 1:30 PM. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Head of School
I am pleased to inform the parent community that the local Board of Education has approved our plans to open the campus to parent visitors for special events, for appointments, or for organized meetings.
You will need an appointment to talk with a teacher or to attend a meeting on campus. Upon entering, parents must also have their temperature measured and scan the government’s QR Code for contact tracing requirements.
Concerts, sports games, grade-level informational meetings, and other events with larger parent numbers are also possible now. To attend a larger event, parents must fill in a Visitor Access Form (in English or Chinese) to enter the campus.
December 10 Winter Concert
The new BOE guidance means that parents are able to attend our Christmas Concert in the afternoon of December 10. There will be no parking available on campus on that day. Parents will be allowed on campus at 1:00 PM, 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the Elementary Concert. Parents are only allowed to go to the theater and not to the classrooms. When the Elementary Concert ends, we must clear the Theater for disinfection procedures as per CECC guidelines. Parents will be allowed into the theater at 3:15 for the 3:30 MS/HS Concert.
I am pleased that parents can come on campus for sports, concerts and other events. We are partners in your child’s learning adventures, and for too long that partnership has been limited because of the coronavirus. Thank you for your support and patience. I look forward to seeing many of you at KAS in the future.
Head of School
I hope you are enjoying a quiet weekend. I am writing to all parents to follow up on the recent pandemic restrictions announced by Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Qi Mai.
Our current practice is to allow parents to drop off or pick up their children inside our main gate. We consider this to be safer than having drop off or pick up on the sidewalk outside, so we will continue this practice. Please keep your distance and wear your mask at all times when you are there.
Parents may not enter the campus buildings to attend a meeting, to go to the Business Office, to visit a classroom, or for other reasons. If you need to conduct any business at the school before September 25, please make arrangements to meet outside or online.
We are not planning field trips or large assemblies or gatherings with our learners during the next two weeks, and we will be careful to follow our normal protocols: washing hands, wearing masks, watching our distances.
Also a quick reminder: all students should leave the campus immediately at the end of the school day if they are not in an approved, supervised activity. This includes our high school students.
These are difficult times, but if we cooperate and work together we can keep learning on campus with minimal disruption, and we can keep the KAS community healthy and safe. We will keep you informed if and when any changes to the current restrictions that apply to our school are made.
In hope and solidarity,
Jim Laney Jr.,
