Each year students are provided with an access code to Family Connection, a web-portal that provides a unique experience to individual students by guiding them on a path toward career and college readiness. Using the tools provided, students map their own path starting with assessments to learn more about themselves, progressing to goal setting and career exploration and then setting a plan to achieve their goals.

Like any “GPS”(Global Positioning System), students are able to explore alternatives, avoid roadblocks, set new goals or destinations and bypass obstacles. Parents, teachers and counselors are able to track progress and collaborate to provide the support that students need.

Each year the guidance counselor meets with all 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th graders to explore the Naviance program and career readiness. Below are just a few of the opportunities that Naviance enables students to embark on:

    • research careers that match their personality
    • research potential colleges and universities
    • prepare a resume
    • watch interviews with professionals in careers of interest
    • make a plan for the future
    • contact colleges and submit official transcript materials

Career development provides the foundation for students to acquire skills, attitudes and knowledge that enables students to make a successful transition from school to university and then to the world’s workforce. The guidance counselor worked collaboratively with teachers to introduce the online Naviance program to promote career planning. This year, all 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th graders spent one to two class periods working in Naviance to explore career options. Benefits of the Naviance program include:

    • An opportunity for students to answer personality test questions to determine which career matches their areas of interest.
    • An opportunity for students to use the data, found in Naviance, to compare daily duties, salaries, and job placement potential.
    • An opportunity for students to watch interviews with professionals, in the fields of interest, to determine if the profession was what they had in mind.
    • An opportunity for students to see how their school subject areas relate to professions.
    • An opportunity for students to get familiar with the system they will use when applying for university.

The Naviance program is now available for individual research and exploration as students continue to develop ideas about their future plans. Next year, the guidance counselor will continue to explore career readiness skills, through the Naviance program, to prepare students for their future careers.
