The writings of acclaimed Taiwanese author Huang Chun-Ming have long been a staple of language and literature classes here at Kaohsiung American School. In an effort to connect student learning with the world around us, Dr. Leigh’s IB English and Ms. Huang’s IB Chinese classes have written to Huang throughout the years with samples of students’ work. Despite his advancing age and recent ill health, Huang has always been gracious and generous in sharing his time and encouragement with our students.
Most recently, IB English students in the class of 2017 started a photo contest in which they had to take photos of scenes in Taiwan that were inspired by Huang’s explorations of the tensions existing in Taiwan between the urban and the rural, the modern and the traditional, the foreign and the local, and the older generations and the younger generations. The winners of the photo contests had their photos printed and we mailed them Huang in Ilan. We were once again blessed to receive a thoughtful reply and signatures on all the photos we sent!

[Special thanks to Naomi Huang, class of 2017, who translated all of the text on the photos from English and who wrote the cover letter to Huang in Chinese.]
