Early Childhood (Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten)
The Early Childhood Program at the Kaohsiung American School serves children in a full day, developmentally appropriate setting designed in the spirit of our American school identity for Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms. Children who are 4-years old on or before September 1 are age appropriate for admission into the Pre-K class. Children who are 5-years old on or before September 1 are age apropriate for admission into the Kindergarten class.
There is a balanced blend of large group, small group, and independent learning experiences to nurture the development of cognitive, language, social, emotional, gross and fine motor skills in a supportive, active environment. Skill development opportunities include purposeful play activities, construction, field study trips, literacy development, and numeracy development. Children have experiences in fine and performing arts (music and visual arts), physical education, library, and technology taught by specialists in these fields.
The Early Childhood Program instructional staff includes only teachers who are highly qualified and certified in Early Childhood Education. In addition, there is a teacher assistant in each classroom.
Lower Elementary (G1-3)
The lower elementary grades provide a secure and stimulating environment where children are encouraged to develop as individuals. Within this environment children are provided with an excellent foundation in the skills needed to become responsible and productive citizens. During the lower elementary grades, study skills are developed and homework is assigned daily.
Upper Elementary (G4-5)
From grade 4 through grade 5, students continue to refine basic skills. Emphasis is on independent study with frequent use of available resources for assignments and regular long-term projects and presentations. Students at the upper elementary level are expected to assume leadership positions and serve as role models. They are encouraged to take an active role as problem solvers. The upper elementary includes a variety of cooperative learning opportunities which build group skills and offer leadership experiences.
