Taiwan is a mostly Buddhist/Taoist country, so Christmas celebrations are going to be less of the Christian nature. However, the Kaohsiung community in general does recognize that Christmas is a big deal to a lot of people. You just need to know the right places to look!
If you are looking for decorations, they are everywhere! Almost all stationary stores will sell Christmas decorations, as well as supermarkets. Lots of places also sell trees (plastic, unfortunately!), so you’ll definitely be able to make your home Christmassy!
Activities/Things to Do
For the Christmas spirit, can start with English-language or Bilingual churches in and around Kaohsiung. There is a thriving Christian community here, and therefore plenty of celebrations to go around.
If you are looking for activities and places to go for Christmas & New Year, also feel free to check out this website. There’s a whole list of things that are happening all around Taiwan. Scroll down for Kaohsiung! Dream Mall often has lots of activities going on (as do a lot of department stores, to be fair!). Their NYE festivities are well known and lots of people really enjoy it! Their fireworks display is also very impressive. The Love River also offers lots of different restaurants and activities throughout the holiday period. An afternoon/evening stroll there is never wrong!
Most larger hotels will also offer a Christmas meal if you would like to do something out of the ordinary as will many foreign restaurants around the city.
What about you? As students, parents, and teachers, what do you do to get into the Christmas spirit? Have we left anything out you can recommend? Tell us in the comments!
